[SOLVED]Possibly faulty new external hard drive? [Input/output error]

I got a new WD external drive for some backups. Formatted as ext4, and started to copy things there.
Right away I got errors:

mkdir: cannot create directory '[path]': Input/output error

and I could not write anything to the drive. unmounting and remounting fixed that, but I am worried that this may be a sign of a faulty drive.
Output of smartctl -a below. I did not recognize anything there as a problem, but am not experienced with smartctl.

Should I be concerned? What can cause input/output error apart from a faulty drive?

Re: [SOLVED]Possibly faulty new external hard drive? [Input/output error]

you need to run a test using smartctl:

smartctl --test=short /dev/sda

change "/dev/sda" to your drive, after running that command you have to wait a few minutes then run:

smartctl -a /dev/sda |grep -i "short offline"

if you see "completed without error" then the drive is ok.

the problem could also be UAS causing issues and needs to be swicthed to usb_storage, check your journal for any and all usb storage errors

Re: [SOLVED]Possibly faulty new external hard drive? [Input/output error]

thanks!

I ran these, and it came up "Completed without error". I'm still a bit concerned about the drive, and the cause of the error, so will keep an eye on it.
