I successfully installed arch to my laptop. It was booting to the command line. Then, in an attempt to run lightdm and xfce, I installed lightdm, lightdm-gtk-greeter, xfce4, and xfce4-goodies. I did not make any changes to any config files. If I understand correctly, lightdm should use lightdm-gtk-greeter by default.
Now, when I reboot the machine, the screen goes black. When I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 I am able to log in at the command line. How do I troubleshoot this?

My monitor was powered off and connected to the laptop. If I power on the monitor, then it works - I get duplicate graphics on the laptop and the monitor. If I disconnect the monitor, then the laptop display works. For some reason, if the monitor is powered off and connected, then the laptop screen goes black.
