The problem appeared after a system update a few months ago, I didn't care enough to fix it back then.
I have two monitors.
When both monitors are connected, video freezes after the system loads, but I can still use the TTY blindly and even start X (which renders fine afterwards).
I tried disconnecting monitors: the problem does not occur when only one of them is connected to the graphics card.
Monitor specs: VGA 1280x1024, HDMI 1920x1080.
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030.
I use proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
