Cannot change laptop monitor resolution the normal (?) way

Hi folks, I'm trying to get a resolution other than 800x600 working. I read that you just had to write this resolution in on the leftmost side of the appropriate line on the config file, and I did, but it isn't working. I'm using fluxbox, and so I don't have any GUI tools for setting the resolution, but changing the resolution by GUI tool didn't work in GNOME anyhow. I tried a number of different horizontal/vertical sync rates, although maybe I haven't tried the right one.

Here is some possibly useful information:

Arch 0.6
Kernel 2.6.3
Intel 852GM card
Gateway m305XL box

Try running it at 16 bit depth instead of 24.  You might not have enough video memory or the driver might not be too hot.  Play with the video depth a bit.

Good idea, but it didn't work. Neither did a depth of 8, which suggests to me that video memory isn't the problem, but then I could be wrong.

Actually, come to think of it, I might well be wrong. I didn't mention I kept getting an error message:

 Unable to open /dev/agpgart (no such file or directory)

I'd read somewhere (on the intel site, I believe) that agpgart (whatever the hell it is) was very important to the sort of intel card I'm using. In fact, I think it said that X wouldn't start without agpgart, although this isn't the case.

In any case, I tried a modprobe intel-agp and got

FATAL: Error inserting intel_agp (path/to/intel-agp.ko): Operation not permitted

In any case, it didn't stop me from starting X, so I sort of ignored it. Does that tell you anything useful?

Use 'xrandr' to see the available modes, and can also use it to change the resolution in a proper way (ctrl alt +/- keeps the virtual desktop the same size). E.g. xrandr -s 1024x768.

I tried, as you suggested, xrandr -s 1024x768. However, it didn't work. Furthermore, I tried xrandr -q, which returned:

which would almost lead me to believe that my monitor simply didn't do 1024x768, except that I can run it in windows.

Now, I have a lead, and one of you who has more actual experience can tell me if this is completely off the wall or what, but here it goes:

1) As mentioned before, the /dev/agpgart is asserted by intel to be absolutely essential.
2) So far (because I can't figure out modprobe.conf), I've had to modprobe intel-agp every time I boot.
3) My card has woefully little video memory; 7MB, i believe.
4) A more experienced friend of mine says that he also has a card with a small amount of video memory, but that linux somehow allocates regular ram to be used as video memory.
5) We suspect that this would have to be configured somehow.
6) If I'm modprobing the necessary part every time I boot up, I suspect the part's own configuration (NOT modules.conf) would not be set up.

If so there would be some file that was associated with agpgart that I would have to set to have enough memory to run the higher modes. Is this making sense to anyone? I hope so, because I feel foolish enough as it is.

I would try to get it working with the standard vesa driver first, and if that works move on to the intel driver. I don't have any experience with flatscreens though, perhaps there's something different about them (e.g. maybe you need to use modelines and no refreshrates). Perhaps xdpyinfo gives some useful info, who knows. I also would remove all modes and stuff except the 1024x768 at 16 bit so that it's clear what's used if X works.

no luck with the vesa driver; it also gives the log message that there is no mode named "1024x768" (in addition to making everything flicker when I kill it, and showing this ugly blast of colors when it starts x). I thought it might require me to recompile the kernel. However, when I try to boot the new kernel, it gives a kernel panic and says that there is a problem with the root device I specified, even though I copied the working kernel's root device specification exactly. Is this a known, solvable problem?

I had a different problem, but the solution may be similar.

Go to your vendor's web site and look for resolutions there for that specific laptop.  That's how I found out that laptops use different screen modes.

Mine is running at 1400 x 1050  :!:  (It's an HP Omnibook 6000, btw -- yours will probably not go up that high)
I was getting these black bars on the sides, plus I had to hit Function+F5 a couple of times after X started -- otherwise I would just get weird stuff.

I changed the screen mode to the above, and removed the framebuffer console that I had set up, and no more black bars, and no more whacking Fn+F5.
