Intermittent hotplug issues

Usually, when I plug in my USB drive, it is detected (this is reflected by dmesg).  However, every so often, hotplug stops working and I have to reboot to fix it.  Any idea what the problem could be?

I'm running a 2.6.19.2 kernel directly from kernel.org.

well hotplug has been gone for some time now i think you want udev
scroll down try the udev restart
