[Solved] Fresh Arch install with existing Home not starting greeter

After booting I don't get a greeter, only a black screen.
Though I can switch to a different session via ctrl + alt + F# where I get a greeter, but login doesn't work. Screen goes black and for a few seconds then returns to login screen.
To get into GUI I login into tty and a run "startplasma-wayland" which starts KDE without any issues.

I have looked throught the journal logs but not found any error that could be connected to the greeter or login. Hoping anyone here can tell me something...

Please post the *full* journal log from the last boot. There's a whole lot missing from the start. Run journalctl -b as root.

Edit: also, I recommend clicking the report link at the bottom and ask a moderator to move the post to Newbie Corner

You seem to load the breeze theme but then sddm complains about some Arch theme?

You're using SDDM autologin? What if you disable that?

You seem to load the breeze theme but then sddm complains about some Arch theme?

I had a theme called Arch installed but not selected, deleted all of them now.

I don't know about that wallet, I have the kwallet subsystem disabled; kwalletmanager isn't installed - I installed it just now to see if it displays any wallets but nothing; disabled kwallet again and uninstalled kwalletmanager

Turning autologin off displays the greeter at startup, but logging in still doesn't start a Plasma Wayland session.

That device would be my motherboard's wifi-card (M.2 I believe). Works fine though

Since you mention "on existing /home" in your title, can you try creating a new (test) user and logging in as that new user?

Possibly something in your shell rc (~/.bash*, ~/.zsh*)?

Edit: oh and when logging in on the console you actually end up in your $HOME, can see and write files there?

So I did some testing, seems to be an issue with zsh for some reason. I have added the default .zshrc and added "exec zsh" to the top of (default) .bashrc in the new user. Login via greeter does not work. If I remove "exec zsh" it does work.
Very weird, since zsh works perfectly fine when logging in to tty. (I do end up in my home)

Aha! The default shell was set to bash, after switching it to zsh login via greeter now works!

By default shell you mean your login shell or /bin/sh?
Why would an (unconfigured) bash cause problems?

The login shell, I ran chsh -s /usr/bin/zsh to fix it.
I wish I knew why it did cause issues when logging in via the greeter...

Nope. I did try to comment out a few things, but onlyt when I removed exec zsh did it start working.
Seems like a bug potentially?

"exec zsh" in your bashrc isn't a good idea anyway since whatever that bashrc is executing is replaced by a standard zsh
Does this mean that this was there before for your main user?

absolutely normal behaviour. an exec will replace the running process (i.e. your login shell parsing that as well as many other filea) with the process you're execing which will be a random zsh instance that doesn't parse the rest of the stuff.

that exec zsh line has no business being there
