[SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

I don't remember anything weird happening during my last distro update, but since then, my KDE session is completely messed up.
Any startup leads to a black screen without any desktop functionality, while specific programs (Librewolf, Konsole, Dolphin, VirtualBox for example) are still running and usable but don't get any borders.
Other usual programs like VLC can't even be executed and Audacity crashes when I try to load a file.
As I open the Dolphin file explorer, it seems like everything is where it's supposed to be... if I accept to omit the localization set up to English, as I see with action labels, dates and space units (KiB).

I got interesting outputs from both journalctl and dmesg, but I couldn't get any solution from it because I am not used to work with self-built kernel modules.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

None of the solutions proposed in this thread did work. I examined the core dump following the wiki page instructions but I didn't extract that much info.

PID: 1830 (at-spi-bus-laun)

I ran the executable and I got this output:

** (process:161016): ERROR **: 18:27:41.984: Cannot get the default GSettingsSchemaSource - is the gsettings-desktop-schemas package installed?

I'm on KDE Plasma. Why is it asking me to install GSettings - a GTK structure? But yes, it's installed.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

at-spi-bus is gtk's a11y stuff (screereaders fro blind people) - you can block that by exporting "NO_AT_BRIDGE=1", it's not related to KDE but will otherwise spawn whenever you lauch a gtk client.

It does not fit

my KDE session is completely messed up … black screen without any desktop functionality … don't get any borders

which would be plasmashell/kwin
Most crashes in the journal are actually from xdg-desktop-portal

It's actually irrelevant to the issue, that disk being external. Nothing changes, no matter if I put it off.

Gonna try. EDIT: No, I can't. SDDM (or what remains of it) tells me "Login failed", without further explanation.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

At least sdb,c,d are affected.

You've clearly an alborate NoExtract list (or delete files)
There're however no broken mtrees nor relevant checksum mismatches, but the big red flag there is the UID/GID mismatches.

stat / /usr /usr/share

and please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

No filters.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

sdb is an external drive and sdc/sdd are both empty slots, nothing is linked to them. Although they were previously linked to physical drives that aren't longer in my build.

Only /usr/share seemts to have been subjected to byjove:byjove ownership?
Why and how? Undo that.

Why and how? Undo that.

Probably a stupid thing I did when I started to use Linux a long ago. Fixed that to root:root.

There's a distinct pattern to all the crashes

That's what I was asking. Only xdg-desktop-portal-kde is installed and I'm not running GNOME Desktop, just several GTK softwares. If it had to cause any problems, why should it put such an important process to crash? Anyways, I can confirm gsettings-desktop-schemas and gsettings-system-schemas to be installed.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

There're pobably more misowned paths.

https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/xapp/ is crashing and would be required by https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … rtal-xapp/

pacman -Qs xdg-desktop-portal
pacman -Qi xapp gsettings-desktop-schemas
ls -l /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
stat /usr/share/glib-2.0

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

xapp comes w/ xed, the desktop schemas from at-spi2-core but also because you've gnome-desktop installed…

seth wrote:

at-spi-bus is gtk's a11y stuff (screereaders fro blind people) - you can block that by exporting "NO_AT_BRIDGE=1"

See whether removing xed/xapp and blocking the at bridge does anything about your situation.

The AT bridge was blocked and I uninstalled both xapp and xed. The issue is still here and everything remains unchanged.

One more thing: replace pipewire-media-session w/ wireplumber - the former is basically bitrot.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

Yes, I definitely did. Although it might be possible I just didn't put the file in the correct place.
Should I put that env variable in /etc/profile.d/ or somewhere else?
OK for wireplumber.

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

You can check

grep -z NO_AT /proc/$(pidof plasmashell)/environ

to see whether at least plasmashell got that parameter.
Try /etc/environment, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Enviro … s#Globally

Did switching to wireplumber achieve anything wrt the original problem?
Can you btw. run "gtk3-demo" w/o it crashing on you? (Or xed, for that matter)

seth wrote:

Not going to work, because as said higher, plasmashell still can't run. The pidof command will result in a void, leading the rest into an error output.

seth wrote:

Fine.

seth wrote:

Sadly, no, it didn't. At least, there's no additional sound problems.

seth wrote:

No, both crashes and returns a core dump error.
Gtk3-demo returns an usual one and warning logs about the software not being able to load SVG icons (might be unrelated), and xed spits me on the face "No GSettings schemas are installed on the system" then dies.

Also, I should mention the fact that even SDDM, while working, is unable to load its own theme according to that weird output: "plugin cannot be loaded for module "QtQuick.Controls": Cannot protect module QtQuick.Controls 2 as it was never registered". I feel like the system doesn't know where to search things.

It didn't work at first because strace was telling me it didn't have the permission while I invoked it with sudo. Nevermind, here's the output now.

strace -f -tt -o /tmp/gtk.strace gtk3-demo
/tmp/gtk.strace | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Where exactly is this coming from? I will have to but don't want to believe "coincidence", the more likely explanation is that people are following stupid advice/blogs/tutorials?

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

Hmm. The only Linux-related tutorials I follow are ones about specific bash commands when there isn't any man page. I couldn't help you on that, I don't remember editing that one for a Flatpak-related issue. Is there a specific way to trace that back?

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

The problem is that this environment variable removes /usr/share (and ~/.local/share) from the search list
Figure where it's set, try to remember how that happened, then remove it.

Edit: there's no universal way to know where an environment variable gets set, you'll have to look up the candidates: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Environment_Variables

Re: [SOLVED] Plasmashell, Kwin crashes at startup ; locales don't work

I found it... it was right in my custom environment variables file, located in /etc/profile.d. I removed it.
Thank you for your help, everything did go back to normal!
