Gnome terminal takes about 30 seconds to load [STILL NOT SOLVED]

Window manager is gnome shell. It takes about 30 seconds to load ghostty or gnome-terminal. These apps load just fine in KDE.

This seems to be the same issue as I'm having or at least quite close to it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=285590 In that post, users stated that removing xdg-desktop-portal-gnome fixed the problem for them, but I cannot remove this due to dependency issues.

I'm running gnome with:

MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland dbus-run-session gnome-session

Running with 'gnome-shell --wayland' fixes the problem, but then I'm not in a proper session and lose a bunch of functionality, so that's not an option.

do not ever use dbus-run-session, it breaks normal dbus and session integration, your normal login should already have a valid DBUS instance.

you'll also not want to export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland globally, it's superfluous but will break (proprietary) tools that don't ship Qt with Wayland enabled.

What happens if you just run gnome-session without dbus-run-session? Your login (at the TTY I'd presume?) already sets up a valid dbus session as part of your systemd user session. I notice you got that from the wiki... that is nonsense, it's getting late might edit later.

Yes, I'm running from TTY.

When running 'gnome-session' TTY just pauses for about a second and returns to the next line of input and awaits another command. Basically, nothing happens and no error is displayed.

That solution seems to work for me; fast loading of terminal and other apps, and I seem to have my session.

I'm not going to add to this and rant about all the changes gnome has made that I don't like. Just use your imagination and pretend I typed several pages and that's the tip of the iceburg.

That said, that issue is fixed, so I call this a [SOLVED] thread!

I'll be sure to share if I hear anyone else with this issue.

Just noticed that some other functionality is not working that I think might be related, so I don't think it's fully solved.

When I'm in Firefox or any other browser and I press on a button to choose a file (lets say to upload a file), nothing happens and this is logged:

Just wanted to add that this functionality works when I used gdm, but apps apps are slow to load initially and take about 20+ seconds. The above results when starting from tty.

Don't try to manipulate XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, re-login and see whether your browser still tries to activate xdg-desktop-portal-gnome or goes w/ xdg-desktop-portal-gtk (and that then works)

Yor session is properly registered and "active" so this is ust gnome being like "I refuse to work if you don't also use GDM"

Thanks. Makes sense. Still learning this, but it's coming slowly.

I took out the 'org.freedesktop.impl.portal.FileChooser=gnome' line and it's letting the browser open the file manager to choose/save files. Success here. Also, terminals and browsers and apps are all loading quickly, so that's good too.

There is still an issue with being able to suspend and hibernate from Gnome's powerdown menu. Strangely, it seems to work sometimes when gnome is first fired up, but after a few minutes clicking on 'suspend' or 'hibernate' does nothing when pressed.

The log tail doesn't seem to contain a sleep attempt, but since gnome uses GDM as screenlocker (and the log expectably shows that it cannot be activated) I'm rather unsurprised that this doesn't work.

As of this moment it works. It seems that things work perfectly after starting up for several minutes and then I'll lose the ability to suspend and hibernate and dim my screen from Gnome's pulldown menu.

I'm running gnome with:

MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland

from .bash_profile.

Setting 'XDG_SESSION_TYPE' to 'wayland' just ends up with gnome not even starting, so it's currently unset and defaulting to 'tty'.

Please post a log that covers at least the time from a successful suspend to an unsuccesful, but gnome will likely just figure that GDM doesn't work and disable the feature in return.

Just note that I don't know at what exact time in the second non-working log where the suspend feature stopped working. I checked about 10 minutes after the working log and noticed it didn't work, but it could easily have failed sooner.

Having tried suspending from the command line again when gnome's menu suspend didn't work, I get the message:

$ systemctl suspend

Running 'systemctl suspend -i' brings up a password prompt which when entered does end up suspending the machine.

Also, I ended up doing an install of EndeavourOS with gnome to a USB stick. This was in an attempt to reverse-engineer a (hopefully) working system. I figured maybe I was doing something wrong with my setup. The Endeavour setup used gdm to start gnome, of course. Strangely, after a few mins of being logged in, I get the same issue with gnome's menu suspend not working and the same error when trying to suspend from the terminal. Let it be known that all logs and info posted above pertains to my purely arch based system.

Thanks for this! I think you found the issue!

I was using iwd as a backend with NetworkManager. I then tried with NetworkManager + wpa-supplicant and then with iwd alone. In all those tests gnome's suspend button did not work after a couple minutes in Brave browser, but it did work when using Firefox regardless of the time I was using it. So it seems to be triggered by Brave.

So perhaps there's a way to inhibit this (call?) in Brave? Would that be the correct approach?

I ran all separately: dhclient, dhcpcd, and iwd. All worked except for dhcpcd (yes, it's installed. tried activating systemd service as well). All put out the same output:

Chromium causes the same issue as Brave for me, not allowing suspend from the menu. I'm thinking of just keeping to Firefox. I only tried Brave because I thought it would be less intrusive and more privacy focused. Firefox seems much better integrated (dpi, text scaling, ease of install...), so I might just stay with Firefox if I'm not gaining anything for the troubles of Brave.

Still sucks that Chromium doesn't work though, but I really don't use that browser anyways.

Disable dhcpcd.service, if you want to use it as NM backend, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … HCP_client

The problem isn't the browser itself but that it tries to access the screensaver API and then probably gnome shits the bed.
I'd guess they use xdg-screensaver, you could try to shadow that w/ a symlink to bin/false or so in /usr/local/bin (assuming that's in your $PATH)

Not sure if I did this correctly, but I made a backup of xdg-screensaver and deleted it, then I linked it as such:

ln -s /usr/bin/false /usr/bin/xdg-screensaver

Still couldn't suspend. Then I tried just copying /usr/bin/false to /usr/bin/xdg-screensaver. Both still didn't resolve the issue.

I tried adding the flag '--disable-screensaver' to brave/chromium. No go.

I noticed that playing videos (such as on Youtube) seems to be what triggers the issue.

What's so strange is that I can't see anyone else with this issue.
