Looking for Methods to Build Software in an Isolated Environment

For building software, I install build dependencies, and after building, I have a hard time uninstalling them. Is there any way to build and install software with customized configurations, experimenting without affecting the main system? Something similar to chroot. After experimenting, I would like to delete the directory and be done with it no leftovers. Is there any way to do this?
