[SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

I decided to update my system and when I rebooted my computer it started at a black screen with only the cursor. I am using KDE Plasma and SDDM with Intel integrated graphics. I have tried to use "kstart" and it returns this:

[under@PC ~]$ kstart
qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display
qt.qpa.plugin: From 6.5.0, xcb-cursor0 or libxcb-cursor0 is needed to load the Qt xcb platform plugin.
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: wayland, xcb, minimal, linuxfb, vkkhrdisplay, vnc, wayland-egl, eglfs, minimalegl, offscreen.

Aborted (core dumped)

I then tried to set the platform to wayland and it returned this:

[under@PC ~]$ export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland
[under@PC ~]$ kstart
Failed to create wl_display (No such file or directory)
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "wayland" in "" even though it was found.

I have tried clearing my cache with "rm -rf /.cache/*" and gave no change and deleted my config files. I have also tried reinstalling SDDM and Plasma by removing it and rebooting then installing.
At this point I have no clue on what else to do, does anyone have any ideas?

[EDIT] My OpenGL was broken and caused the issues of things not rendering. I removed llvm17 and all of its extras and it now works.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

kstart is wrong in any case, where do you have that from? if you wanted to launch plasma from a tty you'd do https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE#From_the_console Since you seem to be able to get to a terminal post the links you get from

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st < /var/log/Xorg.0.log

did you try to change your SDDM theme? If you haphazardly do that chances are you get a theme that either isn't compatible entirely anymore or you lacking the optional qt5-declarative dep for using Qt5 themes.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

I haven't changed my SDDM theme. Also I did not realize that kstart was the wrong thing to use, woops. I am currently using xorg's interface at the moment so I can actually run things while I figure this issue out.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

This returns this link.

curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st < /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This returns this link.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

I forgot to mention that I attempted to start plasma through the console, this is what it returned:

[under@PC ~]$ /usr/lib/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland
org.kde.startup: "kdeinit5_shutdown" QList() exited with code 255
startplasma-wayland: Shutting down...
startplasmacompositor: Shutting down...
startplasmacompositor: Done.

If I tried to go through x11 it just gives me a black screen. Not even a cursor.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

Your GL is broken, suspecting another victim of a random mesa-git install (that's the third or fourth time in two weeks, which random tutorial are you all following?) What output do you get from

pacman -Qs 'mesa|llvm' #That's a pipe | followed by two ll (letter L)
printenv

PS: Not directly related but important to deal with, you have conflicting networkmanagers, disable dhcpcd while using networkmanager and you probably want to install sof-firmware if you expect to hear audio out of speakers

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

looks okayish, the GEM path masking /usr/bin:/usr/local/bin sounds like a desaster waiting to happen but maybe normal. What do you get from

glxinfo -B
eglinfo -B

from that xterm.

This is what returns when I use "glxinfo -B"

[under@PC ~]$ glxinfo -B
name of display: :1
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

For "eglinfo -B"

[under@PC ~]$ eglinfo -B

Why is "DISPLAY=:1" the log is from :0?
Why is "XAUTHORITY=/home/under/.Xauthority"? You're using SDDM? This should™ be some tmpfile.
What is "GEM"?

type -a glxinfo

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

My guess is because I'm using virtual consoles so I can actually use things without being stuck in a black screen with a cursor. Though I'm not too sure about that.

Why is "XAUTHORITY=/home/under/.Xauthority"? You're using SDDM? This should™ be some tmpfile.

Not really sure, I'm still figuring things about the system.

What is "GEM"?

The GEM path is for a program called RubyGems. Its for website development.

(type -a glxinfo; ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo; pacman -Qikk mesa) | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

This returns this link

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

Mesa is intact, no [LD_LIBRARY_]PATH interference.

Not really sure, I'm still figuring things about the system.

What do you mean by figuring things out?
The variable is likely set in some shell rc - and by you?

My guess is because I'm using virtual consoles

No, those are different X11 servers, are you trying to run glxinfo from a TTY login?? The output in #8 shows an xterm environment?

What I more of mean is that I don't truly know.

The output in #8 shows an xterm environment?

I'm currently using Xorg at the moment while I try to figure out why plasma is not working. I should have clarified, sorry about that.

From another console not inside Xorg this is what it returns:

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

At this point I feel like the system is far too gone and whatever I did to obliterate plasma and sddm is just not worth trying to fix it if it's being this problematic. I might just wipe the drive and reinstall everything. Y'all have any ideas what else to try or it's just better to reinstall everything?

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

glxinfo will only ever work in an X11 environment (resp. when given access to an X11 server) - the output of those three commands does not depend on any context and won't change.

Please post teh X11 log for the server where you ran the xterm and glxinfo posted "Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig" and then

[ 35.098] couldn't get display device

try to add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters (yes I know that you don't have an nvidia GPU, this is a magic trick)

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

This is the Xorg log

Also after restarting with nvidia_drm.modeset=1 it appears to not have changed anything with starting up, wayland and x11 still appears to have the same issues.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

The xorg log doesn't reflect that parameter.

[ 5.920] couldn't get display device

leads to

[ 6.020] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
[ 6.027] (II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 6.028] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

You're not gonna re-install yourself out of that.

Try the behavior w/ the LTS kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

Switched to the LTS kernel and all of the issues persist. The one thing that did change is when I ran KDE Plasma through X11 on console returns this:

[under@PC ~]$ startx /usr/bin/startplasma-x11
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

Hold on, your OP was suggesting you're using SDDM?
What does the xorg log for the failed startx approach look like?
Also

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen With Cursor At Startup

Yes, I am using SDDM for logging into plasma. It is also having the same issue with it being a black screen with a cursor. Though on an attempt to see if I can get into plasma I am trying to start it through the console.

ls -lR /dev/dri

[under@PC ~]$ ls -lR /dev/dri
/dev/dri:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 80 Jan 22 16:31 by-path
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 226, 1 Jan 22 16:31 card1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root render 226, 128 Jan 22 16:31 renderD128

/dev/dri/by-path:
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  8 Jan 22 16:31 pci-0000:00:02.0-card -> ../card1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jan 22 16:31 pci-0000:00:02.0-render -> ../renderD128

What does the xorg log for the failed startx approach look like?

Here is the new log file: http://0x0.st/8Xzd.txt

I removed it after it did nothing, but for now I will leave it on to see if it does anything then.
