font quality bump

Hi,
not exactly a newbie, but something just happened and I can't figure out what it is. So I felt like posting here.
I just updated Arch and my font display changed, right in the middle of the update, and for much better.
I went through the list up updated packages and don't understand exactly what caused this. Possibly fontconfig (2:2.15.0-2 -> 2:2.16.0-1) - not sure, though.

Did it happen to anybody else? Know why??

BTW I'm really pleased with the result

No idea whether or what's the cause, there's a difference in new clients but it makes me think I'm gonna need glasses. (Luckily I tested this before a reboot and can compare the old clients - my eyes are still ok)

Edit: seems subpixel rendering is gone, it's not fontconfig but more likely freetype2 (last update august) harfbuzz?
Edit #2: not harfbuzz nor (kinda obvious but hey) freetype2…
Edit #3: affects gtk3 + Qt6 but not Qt5 (???) or xterm.

but pango would only affect gtk clients, not Qt6 (I straces qt6ct, it doesn't load pango via plugin or so) - so we might see different things or there're independent effects (as other clients are not affected by this and I did update Qt from 6.7 to 6.8… 'cause I'm lazy

If you inspect text with some (non-blurring) magnifier and there're no colored pixels on it you're currently not getting subpixel rendering (lowering the resolution by a magnitude, but if the wrong subpixel layout had been used before because your monitor isn't rgb ordered, that's still gonna look *much* better)

Looking into my own xrdb, "Xft.rgba" was set to "none", setting it "rgb" restored subpixel hinting.
Bottom line, Qt6.8 prefers xrdb over fontconfig, so if you have/had dumb stuff in there, you need to fix this.

It's however unlikely related to the OPs situation.

Agree on obvious condenders, but I have not found any evidence in the changelogs - did not try hard, though.

I run XFCE4, so my clients (99%: Xfce terminal) are actually mostly GTK; so is chromium, to which most of my visual memory is attached.

I actually zoomed to look for subpixel rendering as a first thing, but I suspect it was blurring (used alt+scrollwheel) and I did not think of anything else at the moment. I will try to magnify a screenshot asap, but I'll have no frame of reference regarding the past... maybe I'll look for old screenshots

Also agree your solution is likely not relevant to my case.

Does alt+wheel zoom the desktop on xfce?
ctrl+wheel in the browser will just scale the fonts, you don't get to see how they're rendered.
In doubt try xmag.

For gtk, my money is on pango - it's directly what renders fonts in gtk and you updated by 2 versions.

I took a screenshot and magnified it with a graphic utility (lens tool). Subpixel rendering is definitely there now.
