How to Change Defualy Text Editor to Neovim?

I have been sitting here for an hour trying to change my default text editor to neovim and i just cant, ive read through threads and tried to do everything said but no matter what text editor i use i get permission denied.

SHELL=/usr/bin/bash
EDITOR=nvim

i dont even know how it echos editor as nvim, i have tried vim, nano, zed, neovim and they all give me permission denied.
