I have a PC with an nVidia RTX 5090. I'm trying to use a wayland KDE plasma session.
My problem is that in KDE Plasma, the Display Configuration shows only a single resolution available (1024x768) 4:3 and nvidia-smi shows no devices.
Dual booting into Windows on another drive the expected resolutions are available and the card is recognized.
I'm running the linux kernel version 6.13.2-arch1-1 and installed packages:
nvidia 570.86.16-5
plasma-desktop 6.2.5-1, kscreen 6.2.5-1I added the following to my .bash_profile to start plasma at login:
/usr/lib/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland
exitjournalctl -b

On windows at least full driver support for 5090s seems to have landed with 572.x, so maybe the 570 driver simply can't properly cope with the card yet. Just a hunch.
Edit: nevermind, 570.86.16 has beta support for 50 series.

I've used both nVidia and AMD on Linux in the past. They both can have problems. It's naive to think otherwise. I've no doubt this is simply a setup mistake on my part or some package needs an update.
Phoronix certainly got it working with no issues on Ubuntu.
In any case AMD simply does not offer a product capable of meeting my current needs.

unless you render the next pixar movie on your system I don't see any real "NEED" for a 5090 which can'T be done by other high end gpus ... anyway - that's up to you
I'm well aware that there are at least as many people out there not having any issues with nvid on linux as people having issues with amd on linux - some get lucky in some lotteries while others keep losing - that's live and often comes down to very specific quirks of very specific combinations hard to analyze - not just linux but also windows simply because with the huge number of different hardware and even many more of different driver versions it's just impossible to test all configurations unless someone sets some base point everyone agrees upon
point is: both from personal experience as well as countless of forum topics across the board it's common for linux often lacks behind in proper driver support for new hardware
I'm sure your issue will get resolved at some point with some update - but grabbing that card pretty much the time it became available already implies issues to be expected - which, quite honestly, makes this topic kinda pointless
arch already is one of the fastest main line distributions so support for new hardware is better than on something like suse or debian which, seen from arch, are stuck in last century - but even arch is now guarantee for premium support of a new gpu that was released just days ago and with drivers still in beta stage
so if you need whatever that card gives you that others don'T I guess for now you're likely limited to windows as thier drivers seem to be further developed already

If you do not have any possible solution to add to the technical question being posed you could help by not saying anything cryptearth.

if all you want is to complain hardware not working proper yet as drivers are not ready don't start a topic just to complain
you asked for it and I gave you an objective reply - if you don't want to read others thoughts don't ask for it
Offline
if all you want is to complain hardware not working proper yet as drivers are not ready don't start a topic just to complain
What evidence is there that this specific issue is caused by the nvidia driver? What are your criteria for deciding when a driver is ready and how do you apply that to hardware you do not have access to? Do you intend to hijack all threads relating to the Nvidia 5090 as you consider them a waste and the purchaser needs to be educated?
Edit:
Please post the full system journal and also a log from X11 (this is just for diagnostics).

Thanks I should have thought to add the output for journalcrl -b. I have added it now.
I'm not using X but if you think it would be helpful I could try setting it up.

First thing I see is that you're using the closed driver, which doesn't support Blackwell. See the NVIDIA wiki page.
Edit: and the journal backs that up:

OK thank you. Does this mean I would need to install nvidia-open-beta from the AUR?
Offline
extra/nvidia-open or extra/nvidia-open-dkms from the official repos should suffice. Both are version 570.86.16 at the time of writing.

Thank you! After replacing the nvidia package with nvidia-open and rebooting the card is now recognized and (cross fingers) so far seems OK.
I don't fully understand the difference between nvidia and nvidia-open. I would have thought if anything the non-open version would have more support for newer cards.
In any case thanks again Whoracle and Scimmia for pointing me in the right direction.

Which is why I pointed you to the NVIDIA wiki page, which covers these and links to a very relevant nvidia recommendation/blog post.

OK. I'm still learning and do miss things. At any rate maybe this thread will save someone else some trouble in the future.

Great to hear
This solution will have a half-life, since in a months time or so I guess NVIDIA will have support in their closed drivers, and the amount of 50 series card in the wild is minuscule, let alone arch users with those cards, but still.
Cribbing this from @seth:
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

No, they won't. You need to read the wiki as well.

Don't beat yourself up too much. I consider myself an intermediate Linux user and it took me a week or two to wrap my head around what was going on after installing my RTX 5080 in a system that was previously working fine with a 5070 ti.
The wiki is a little bit cryptic IMO since it doesn't specifically mention Blackwell architecture. Saying "Turing (NV160/TUXXX) and newer" is a bit confusing since those aren't desktop card designators. I had to skim through the xorg logs maybe 10 times before I saw the message near the top that specifically says to install nvidia-open. But the message is there, and startx even was throwing an error saying specifically which log to look in. So this was moreso just a matter of my dyslexic self skimming through the important parts of the logging when they were staring me right in the face. ![]()
This thread would have saved me a lot of time and trial and error, if I had thought to just search the forums for "blackwell" instead of "rtx 5080" and "rtx 5090."
Edit: actually I just looked it up and "turing" is the code name for the RTX 20xx and GTX 16xx cards. So the wiki is fine, I just didn't realize there was so much overlap in the driver support since I had just used the proprietary blob for 10+ years without even really having a reason to dig into this stuff.
