Steam suddenly won't launch any games

Hello,

I have some problem with Steam starting around a couple of days ago; Steam suddenly won't launch any of my games from Library or desktop Shortcuts.
The symptoms are all the same: Steam said "Launching" and suddenly just ends.

I tried:
- Reinstalling Steam (even deleted the ~/.steam directory, cleaning up pacman cache) but upon reinstalling, the issue persists
- Moving the games to a different Library directory in a different Drive
- Redownloading the games
- Disabling Steam overlay, running on different Proton version
- Running steam-native-runtime

Running Steam and debugging it with gdb doesn't produce meaningful logs either:

chdir "/mnt/steam/Games/steamapps/common/Bayonetta"

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

Where are your games located,disks/filesystems?  In the simplest case, and there are some traces of that, 6.13.1 has some bigger bugs in it's FUSE implementation you might want to check linux-lts (though I'm not entirely sure whether that might not have been backported, you could also opt for rolling back the kernel to 6.12.10 state if you don't remember that happening there)

If it's not that then, there's a bunch of trouble on the SATA bus. In the more harmless cases, your disks aren't properly seated, check the cables that they're all plugged correctly, or a bug in the med_power power policy of the kernel you could disable by setting it to max_power https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … Management

In the more dire cases you're looking at a failing disk, maybe post a

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX

of the disks in question.

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

Games mainly resides on a mounted RAID 0 drive, formatted in NTFS. I know it's a bit weird, but I am still dual booting to windows, so what I planned is that I still can access my library in Windows should the need arise.
I tried smartctl as per your suggestion, however the drive wasn't recognized by it.

fstab value is as follows:

# /steam
UUID=C090994190993F3A   /mnt/steam              ntfs-3g         rw,relatime,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=022,fmask=133

I am also aware of the errors in SATA bus, hence I tried moving it to a more stable drive, however the problem still persists, hence my confusion. If the problem is caused solely by the failing SATA bus on the said drive, should moving it to a different, better conditioned drive remediate the issue?

tbh I can't really recall if I did a system upgrade prior or after this issue; what I can tell you is that the issue arises for the last 2 days. My current kernel could be installed beforehand.

as for the power policy, it is currently set to med_power_with_dipm

- Moving the games to a different Library directory in a different Drive

Was the new location on a linux filesystem ?

If not, check https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … _partition.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

Yes, as mentioned, there are FUSE errors in 6.13 and ntfs-3g is a fuse driver. Technically there's the in kernel ntfs3 driver that's not based on FUSE and is not going to be subject to those issues (source, me, I also run a steam lib on NTFS for similar reasons but with ntfs3 instead and my stuff still works)

That said, I'd say the immediate issue will likely be the fuse interaction and you will want to follow https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … issues/110 for when this is fixed and for the time being either switch to ntfs3 (... or less disruptive, switch to linux-lts)

You should also follow lone_wolfs link, and especially make sure you're symlinking the compatdata folder to a linux FS (especially so if you intend to use ntfs3 instead of ntfs-3g, that has had a bunch of issues if the proton prefixes weren't located on a linux FS)

On a sidenote with regards to smartctl, you did get that sdX is a placeholder to be replaced with the actual letter pertaining to your device? If you selected the correct drive and it not getting recognised, while possible, sounds like a strange issue (unless this is actually a HW RAID, in which case chances that this isn't supported by smartctl are very high), in any case setting the policy to max_performance could also be a test on whether it helps get rid of the ATA errors, which might give you trouble down the line.

Hmm...interesting. I didn't use windows_names options, and the guide uses ntfs instead of ntfs-3g which, AFAIK, the recommended one.

Both libraries are on NTFS, since I am still dual booting. However, since I know that my rig has no issues playing games on Steam, I am considering going full EXT4 for my libraries.

I will try symlinking it to my linux drive and see if it helps.

I see, I have to say that the experience have been rather finicky, having an NTFS drive as my Steam library, and the ATA problem didn't help either.
I also have tried moving my Proton prefixes to the library in my linux drive though; but I will try symlinking nonetheless.

Regarding the smartctl, I tried it to my RAID drive but the results is as follows:

[cipley@CIPLEY-ARCH ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/mapper/ldm_vol_CIPLEY-PC-Dg0_Volume1

Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

[cipley@CIPLEY-ARCH ~]$

It wasn't even showed up in smartctl --scan:

[cipley@CIPLEY-ARCH ~]$ smartctl --scan

/dev/sdb -d scsi # /dev/sdb, SCSI device

/dev/nvme0 -d nvme # /dev/nvme0, NVMe device
/dev/nvme1 -d nvme # /dev/nvme1, NVMe device
[cipley@CIPLEY-ARCH ~]$

Oh and I'm pretty sure I don't install Steam via flatpak; I used pacman

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

for the ntfs driver situation, ntfs-3g was the only viable choice until two or three years ago. Since then ntfs3 is an in-kernel driver that performs faster than ntfs-3g (and in this case has the side effect of sidestepping the FUSE bug in the current kernel, but that's an anomaly right now). however has been plagued by a bunch of corruption issues in it's early stages and it was definitely handy to have a Windows chkdsk available. Since beginning of last year IIRC around the 6.9 series I haven't had any corruptions with the ntfs3 driver anymore. But ntfs-3g is definitely the more battle tested variant right now it just happens to be a victim of a somewhat global fallout with anything interacting with FUSE (e.g. flatpak and appimages are big ones) on 6.13 kernels

for smartctl a dev mapper is a logical layer that's not going to be smartable, you run that against the actual physical disks in any case, i.e. /sda[a-d]. SMART data is stored per disk and gives information on disk health.

Drive 2 (/dev/sdd) failed the smartctl, said "INQUIRY failed", I wonder why...

I also noticed that I encountered disk write error / I/O error when I tried moving around files from the RAID drive...I guess the RAID itself has been fked.
Maybe I'll try salvaging what can be saved and try again.

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

Bumping the thread for some update:
Finally decided to dismantle my RAID drive anyway and reformat them to EXT4 since NTFS has been a headache for Linux. My Lutris library is being affected as well.

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

another update:

I dismantled my NTFS RAID array, and recreate another EXT4 formatted RAID0 with mdadm
then I tried putting some of my games to that array....but Steam still won't launch them. No error, nada.

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

I think I get another clue now....

It seems like I need to execute chmod 777 to basically all of my library folder, lest Steam would not execute anything.
After I chmod 777, Steam now can execute them.
It's kinda strange though...I already put the games in a normal non-RAID drive formatted in ext4, but still require it...

this in my current fstab entry for the library, maybe I did something wrong:

# /mnt/steam --> /dev/sdb
UUID=5c7879b1-1883-442d-bec8-11ff6836d55b       /mnt/steam      ext4    rw,suid,dev,exec,nouser,nofail,auto,async     0       3

Re: Steam suddenly won't launch any games

You need to chown /mnt/steam after the mount to your user so your user can access everything. On ext4 filesystem permissions are stored on the filesystem you need to set them recursively correctly.

FWIW the fuse errors should™ be fixed in 6.13.2 arch kernels
