Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

The new cables are wirelogic with the certified ultra high speed cable sticker. 48Gbps, noise dissipation, eARC, HDR. The two in this set are 8'. The one I was using before is 6', it is also rated for 48Gbps. I just noticed though that there are instructions on the box of the new cables for proper noise dissipation and max performance to have the arrows on the plugs pointing towards the TV/A/V receiver, and at least right now they are facing the opposite direction towards the GPU. I have no idea how they were oriented all the other times, but it is working now even facing the wrong direction.

Oh, this is the EDID I get in the KDE info centre in system settings (did you know about this method of obtaining EDID?). It shows 120Hz for 4K, but not 144Hz, even though Im using it right now (and the TV (Samsung S90C) is definitely rated for 144Hz (at least in "game mode", which I don't have on), one of the reasons I bought it):

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

What does the binary edid currently actually look like?

The posted rendition shows detailed timings for

    DTD 1: 3840x2160 60.000000 Hz 16:9 135.000 kHz 594.000000 MHz (1872 mm x 1053 mm)
    DTD 2: 2560x1440 59.950550 Hz 16:9 88.787 kHz 241.500000 MHz (1872 mm x 1053 mm)
    DTD 3: 2560x1440 119.997589 Hz 16:9 182.996 kHz 497.750000 MHz (1872 mm x 1053 mm)

which is at least 600MHz TMDS but the interpretation bails on a non-conformant extension block.

Do you have a 1m cable (between 2 and 4 feet, depending on who's you're using to measure tongue)?

I have no idea how they were oriented all the other times, but it is working now even facing the wrong direction.

Maybe flip it around still, see what the updated edid says.

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

No, I don't have any cables that short that are rated high enough to carry the signal. Don't think they'd be long enough either for my setup.

Flipping the cables around ruined everything again and I'm stuck at 30Hz. Any idea how to get it back now? Was hoping to actually use the system today lol.

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

Oh, thats weird, I went into the TV menu and selected connection settings -> external devicice manager -> input signal plus and enabled it for the HDMI port Im using and it instantly went from 1080p 120 to 4K 144. Good to know. I tried that yetserday but it only made it go to 4K 60Hz. At least the cables are pointed the right way now?

TMDS, you could get up to 1440p@144Hz on that connection, but 3840 × 2160@120Hz would require https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … ubsampling
But I'd expect the system to be HDMI2.x/FRL5/6 (mostly depending on the Tv) - has the situation at least stabilized w/ the altered Tv setting and flipped cable?

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

Both the TV and the GPU have HDMI 2.1. Ostensibly, that's the only way I'd be getting 144Hz at 4K as I am.
The situation is back to normal I guess you could say. The display settings get messed up pretty much every time I turn off the TV and turn it back on for any length of time over a few minutes. I restart the system and the right display settings are restored.

I dont remember this ever happening when I was using Windows 11 with this TV though. It only started once I switched to Arch Linux. I'm pretty sure the month I used Linux Mint it didn't do this, either. This is why I assumed it was a problem with the OS.

What are the differences between Mint and Arch? Other than using wayland instead of X11. I get the same issues on X11 with weird display settings though so I keep thinking it's something to do with Arch.

edit: could it have something to do with SDDM using X11 and different settings?

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

kernel, driver, desktop environment - mint will have used cinnamon, so no kscreen?
However: the constrain comes from your Tv, not the OS - how does it currently behave on a mint live system?

getting 144Hz at 4K as I am

You're be running the output it's announced specs… there's no 144Hz mode in that edid.

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

Oh, Im 100% certain I am running at 144Hz, I even have the KDE plasma FPS counter in the corner of the screen to confirm. I can definitely feel the difference too, in the cursor, scrolling, etc. When I'm stuck at 30Hz its painful. I'll test a mint live environment later and report back.

kscreen never seems to be running when I check. Its clicked to start at startup but it doesnt seem to run after that at the least. Enabling or disabling it hasnt seemed to change anything. When I do manually run it after startup when it says its not running, it resets my display settings but doesnt seem to change whats available at the time. If the settings rae messed up they remain messed up, if they arent, they don't.

output from those commands:

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

"qdbus" (maybe "qdbus6") - sorry, I typo a lot.

You're currently running at 144Hz - on a naive modeline w/o any blanking reduction.
But the xrandr output on wayland isn't helpful itr (notably missing the edid to explain why that is)

I even have the KDE plasma FPS counter in the corner of the screen to confirm

That's useless and only means that kwin_wayland syncs at 144fps, ideally see what the Tv tells you.

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

Geometry: 0,0,1280x720

Are you running the monitor at 720p (HD-ready)??

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

No, that's because of the 3x scaling.

Re: resol. and refresh rate lost after wake from sleep or monitor shut off

So at least that part is a representation of what kwin thinks/says only - it doesn't reflect the physical mode.
If you cannot get the output to tell your the rate, does xrandr, on an X11 session, suggest you're running at 144Hz while the EDID only advertises 120Hz?
