Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

I have this weird problem on my computer. Whenever I switch from AC power to battery, I can't open any new windows. Any windows/program opened before the switch work as they should, but nothing opens after I have switched to running on battery power.

Programs work fine if I specifically boot on battery power or AC power but break when switching from AC to battery. I have tried to switch from TLP to kdepowerdevil, power-profiles-daemon, tuned, auto-cpufreq. The issue still persists.

Is the journal supposed to cover such power source switch and does it coincide with

What happens if you try to run a new process from an interactive shell (konsole)?

The command executes. Firefox opens without any issue but msedge does not. Neither does konsole or vscodium. On executing 'vscodium' in konsole, it just exists. Executing 'msedge' takes a whole lot of time but does nothing.

Weirly enough, konsole is the program the problem seem to most occur with. Even on X11, konsole does not open at all. vscodium opens with a blank window. The problem is there even on X11.

Is the journal supposed to cover such power source switch and does it coincide with

I am not sure what you mean by that? Please tell me what other logs to post. That will be helpful.

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

I am not sure what you mean by that?

https://deepl.com - does the log you posted span a timeframe where you unplugged the AC?
And if so, when was that and is it the moment where the amdgpu module issued a warning.

Seems you're running on the amdgpu chip and the only output is attached there as well.
You're not exporting DRI_PRIME anywhere?

printenv

Firefox opens without any issue but msedge does not. Neither does konsole or vscodium. On executing 'vscodium' in konsole, it just exists. Executing 'msedge' takes a whole lot of time but does nothing.

Weirly enough, konsole is the program the problem seem to most occur with. Even on X11,

It would seem that firefox runs on xwayland?

What about applications that are /not/ konsole on X11?
Same issue or do vscodium/msedge keep working there?
Also are those flatpaks?
Are other programs affected? Eg. kwrite?

I am sorry but I do not remember the time of the switch for the previous journalctl output. However here is another journalctl log and the time of switch is precisely '01:43:25'.

journalctl -b --since "2025-03-16 01:43:20" --until "now"

You're not exporting DRI_PRIME anywhere?

No, I did not mess with gpu settings yet. I have only installed gpu drivers as directed by the wiki.

It would seem that firefox runs on xwayland?

No, I checked it from extramaus, xlsclients, xwininfo. None of them pointed to firefox running on xwayland when on Plasma (Wayland). vscodium was running on xwayland. Firefox, konsole, kwrite were running on wayland as checked by

 qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.showDebugConsole

What about applications that are /not/ konsole on X11?
Same issue or do vscodium/msedge keep working there?

They do not work on X11 either. For vscodium, it only opens a blank window on X11 which doesn't even open on Wayland. After the power switch, kwrite doesn't even open, even through konsole.

I haven't installed any flatpaks. I have only installed programs using pacman.

Also, I have tried to check if the power switch problem occurs on windows 10. But it seems to work fine.

By the way, could this power switch issue be stemming from cpu-frequency scaling? I must note that I used to have 'auto-cpufreq'  and 'tlp' running in hopes of having better battery life. Although, I have removed them now, the issue still persists.

Edge seems to have crashed a lot - maybe it left behind a somewhat usable coredump to shed some light onto the cause: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump
Did you intall nvidia-lts along the LTS kernel?

Yes, I just installed linux-lts along with nvidia-lts. The issue is present with linux-lts kernel. On linux-lts, I just tried to run krunner after the power switch but it crashed and here is the journalclt log for it if it helps:

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

krunner is waiting for IO, the other coredumps end in some private stack area, did you install the debuginfod data?

The AC is "just" AC, not a dock w/ other devices (eg. ethernet)?
If it wasn't for

fine if I specifically boot on battery power or AC power but break when switching from AC to battery

I'd say the system is starving on the battery.
So

windows/program opened before the switch work as they should, but nothing opens after I have switched

+ the dormant state is likely the nvme…?

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

Sorry for the late reply, I was traveling. After switching to linux-lts kernel, I have just discovered that nouveau driver is being used for the nvidia 4050 card on my PC. Strangely enough, the issue with the power switch is not there when using nouveau driver. But when I install nvidia or nvidia-lts along with nvidia-utils, the problem reappears.

I have made a timeshift snapshot of the time just after switching to linux-lts kernel with nouveau driver in use.
This output is from the mentioned timeshift snapshot

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

Are glxinfo/glxgears affected?
(Cause /then/ we might just strace them)
In that case:

strace -f -tt -o /tmp/glxinfo.strace glxinfo -B

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

Ok, so I ran the glxinfo strace command for both scenarios. First I ran it while AC plugged in. Normally and with nvidia-prime.

Then I removed AC source and shifted on battery power and waited for things to break. After that, I again ran glxinfo strace command normally and with prime-run in already opened terminals. With prime-run, it executed but without it (normal command) it got stuck and the terminal/process didn't even respond to CTRL+C.

More information :
I have been trying out different methods for NVIDIA Optimus given in the wiki. These command were run while I was using envycontrol to run on 'hybrid' mode. But if I use envycontrol to switch to 'integrated' mode then the power switch issue is not there. Apps opens without any problem.
Using Optimus-Manager results in black screen after boot.

As for glxgears, when AC was plugged in,

X connection to :1 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

On first try, this only displayed a portion of the gears, screenshot. But after reboot and with AC plugged in, it renders all the gears correctly.

Then I removed AC source and waited for the issue to reoccur (takes more or less 10 seconds of being idle) after which new apps stop opening. Then, I ran glxgears again.

With normal command, I waited for two minutes but nothing happened.

So it's for sure the nvidia device that absolutely no longer responds.
The funny part is that it seems to work on prime-run, nothing is attached to the GPU, so it should™ not be invoked at all.

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#NVIDIA and check runtime_status, runtime_suspended_time and control.
Try to

echo on | sudo tee /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power/control

and see whether that allows you to run new GL clients.
(You don't have to do anything else there, RTD3 is default for your GPU)

Maybe before that, see whether you can explicitly

DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_05_00_0 glxinfo -B

limit GL to the APU.

I suspect you'll also have no issues when attaching an output to the nvidia GPU (HDMI?)?

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

echo on | sudo tee /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0000:01:00.0/power/control

This outputs : no such file or directory.

 DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_05_00_0 glxinfo -B

This doesn't work either, it just gets stuck.

I have just resorted to using 'integrated' mode by envycontrol. I am exhausted by days of troubleshooting this issue and I don't think hybrid setup will work on Wayland as I have read some other threads with similar issues which also had people struggling to get hybrid graphics work on Wayland.

Thank you for trying to help.

Re: Can't open new window/program after switching from AC power to battery

The hybrid (regular prime) mode generally works on wayland.

There're multiple paths to rome… err… devices:

echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01/power/control

But in any event check the power states.

The main question is basically why the device gets accessed at all.
