[SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

for some reason after updating my system xfce4 crashes when I play videos. I first noticed the issue on youtube; I checked and playing any videos (whether on web or locally) on Firefox, tor, and vlc breaks. Audio only formats seem to be doing fine. When xfce crashes it crashes to the dm (xdm). I reinstalled xfce and xdm and that didn't work and I've rebooted my system and that didn't help either.

xdm logs show this:

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

The X11 server crashes, not xfce - so let's see what's all in use.
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

On a formal note, please use [code][/code] tags, the BBS predates markdown by approximately your age.

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

You're using xf86-video-intel? How old is this system? It really isn't recommended except on very old system, and flat out won't work correctly on new ones.

Edit: I see it, 945GM, so very old. Might still be worth trying modesetting.

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

So, looking through modesetting and the intel graphics page, to set that up there should be a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file, I don't have that file. Hopefully this is the reason I've been bugging out. I just created it and set up modesetting. I'm going to restart my system now and see if that works

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

Modesetting didn't work on my computer at all, when I set it up xorg would crash instantly, and updating the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file to set up intel graphics didn't fix my issue either

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

Looking back through the log, I've copied it all into one file and grepped for error messges, what's intresting is the last two error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[ 134.221] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 134.223] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

could this be the error? and if so, why didn't the system detect the missing card file sooner?

intrestingly there is a /dev/dri/card1

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

I ln'ed card1 to card0, and I made sure to install fbdev, although the error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log went away, the sever still crashes

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

The server log in #5 doesn't include a crash.

Modesetting didn't work on my computer at all, when I set it up xorg would crash instantly, and updating the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file to set up intel graphics didn't fix my issue either

The server will fail to initialize if you remove xf86-video-intel but keep that config file.
Post logs of the recent crashes (they'll be labeled Xorg.0.log.old after a restart)

I ln'ed card1 to card0

Do not do that! (Resp. the change is transient anyway) - the card renumbering happens because of the simplydumb device, but that's not relevant here.

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log.old is dated.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old shows you're still running on xf86-video-intel

The crash only seems to happen after you switch the VT?

[ 1033.240] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
[ 1066.139] (II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch

Either way, remove xf86-video-intel and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf, try again and report back w/ the results and a new log.

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce4 crashes when playing videos

I didn't think it would work, and indeed it didn't. Scimmia brought up the use of xf86-video-intel, the reason I use it is because my computer is a 2006 dell latitude, it's the only driver that works. I decided to check just to be sure, and yeah all that happened was that I was brought to a tty and had to reinstall xf86-video-intel

anyways: here's the ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log The other ones didn't have any change

pacman -Qs mesa

Try to globally "export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1", see whether you can crash the server w/ either "mpv -vo xv" or "mpv -vo x11"

Edit: mesa check will likely be relevant, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=304266
