In the past 1-2 weeks I've been having trouble booting my workstation, and resuming after an (external) monitor power cycle. The result is always a black screen, but it happens at different times, non-deterministically. Sometimes, before login. Sometimes, after, but before X & i3 initialize. Sometimes X & i3 start, but I get a black screen after power cycling the monitor.
In all cases, I am unable to switch to a console, but I am able to ssh in from another machine to look at logs, change configs, etc.
I suspect this is a graphics driver issue.
I've looked at the NVIDIA troubleshooting page and various forum posts re: NVIDIA. I've tried the recommendation in 1.1 and 1.3 from that page, to no avail. I've also tried adding the nvidia drive to the early MODULES in mkinitcpio.
I'd appreciate any help with sorting this out.

You mean the monitor enters powersaving (or you switch it off) and when resumign from that powersaving (or you switch it on) won't generate any output?
I am able to ssh in from another machine to look at logs, change configs, etc.
Check "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q", the output might just get disabled (though less chance w/ i3 and w/o x-on-resize… and also unlikely because of "I am unable to switch to a console")

Exactly. Resumption from powersaving has been fine, IIRC. But, resumption from me switching it off has not.

Not intentionally. I think this is dhcpcd's default behavior? The manual says that even in quiet mode, it will still write to syslog, which is what I think that the journal is recording. But, if there is a way to quiet it, let me know!

Update: I did a little physical debugging and I managed to isolate the issue to that monitor's two DP ports. Other monitors (and other ports on this one) are fine. This makes me think that the monitor is the problem, not the driver.
