Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

Hello,

Running into a weird issue, only started within the past two weeks. I have a Samsung Odyssey G9, and it has the PIP/PBP feature that lets two devices split the monitor.

Recently, after I presume nvidia driver updates, the following now happens when I turn on PIP/PBP

- No device connected noise occurs (it normally did, as if the monitor was getting re-plugged)
- Monitor outright fails to get a signal from my machine
- Turning off PIP/PBP does not bring back the display
- Unplugging and replugging the monitor does not get the display back
- Entering a tty doesn't bring it back either

Only remedy is a system reset. The weird thing is that my machine will send a proper signal if started with PIP/PBP enabled, and will return to full resolution correctly when it is turned off. But only if booted with it on.

Tertiary: I did a cleaning of my  .cache around the same time this began, no idea if that could be related.

System Info
- kernal 6.12.18-1-lts
- DE Plasma 6.3.2
- WM KWin
- Session is X11, but same issue when in Wayland
- nvidia driver: nvidia-open-dkms 570.123.04-1
- Card: 3080 Ti

I've not experienced any other display related issues. Really not sure what the culprit might be, so any advice is appreciated : )

Thanks,

Tyumici

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

My setup has a Dell monitor with a Mac connected via HDMI and a PC with Nvidia card connected via DisplayPort.
When I switch from PC/DP to Mac/HDMI, it works fine. But when I switch back to PC/DP, I see the same issue: no video input (from pc to monitor), unplugging does not bring back, switch to tty does not bring back.

These issues started with recent updates (can't tell if Nvidia or kernel or something else).
FWIW, I do have KMS enabled. Running Gnome on Wayland.

I'm experiencing something very similar since updating a few days ago (though I hadn't updated for a long time before that).

My setup is also similar: I have an Acer monitor with a work laptop (also Linux, not Arch though) connected via HDMI, and a PC with Nvidia card connected via DisplayPort.
There is one important difference: I see a completely white screen after switching to DP, instead of "no video input". Similarly, unplugging, switching to tty, ... don't do anything to fix it.

I did discover however that I can still log into the machine via SSH from my work laptop, and shut down the system gracefully, instead of resetting. When I did this last, top showed Xorg running at 100% CPU (I tried killing it, but no luck) and dmesg showed "ERROR: GPU:0: Idling display engine timed out".

I'm just sharing this in case it's related -- I appreciate that this could very well be a different problem, as the symptoms are slightly different, and I don't want to derail the thread from the original issue being discussed.

You're good, it sounds mostly like the same as what barraponto and myself are seeing.

I will also add that my setup is laptop via hdmi, and linux machine via display port. The system also isn't crashing or anything, since I still get audio that was playing when this occurs.

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

Following https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=303845 I tried adding

nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0

to kernel params, but the issue persists.

FWIW, these are the kernel params I have set in GRUB:

nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

I'm now seeing the same, even when the monitor has been off for a while and I turn it back on again (while the PC connected to the DisplayPort has stayed on). So no switching between DP and HDMI involved.

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

I get similar behavior when using a KVM switch - switching to my work laptop and then back to my desktop. It previously worked flawlessly until the past week (not sure when exactly, just the past week). Now, the screen stays black when switching back to the desktop until I restart. The system seems fine, though; audio on the desktop continues to play, but the screen just goes black. Monitors are connected to KVM switch over DP. Laptop is connected to Thunderbolt 4 dock, which is then connected to KVM switch over DP.

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

I disabled display power management completely on Friday, and I have not seen the white screen issue since.

(In xfce4-power-manager, under "Display power management", "put to sleep after" and "switch off after" are set to "never".)

This is workable for the time being, just have to remember to turn off the display to avoid burn-in!

... unfortunately I spoke too soon, it just happened again in spite of the above changes.

Re: Monitor becomes unreachable by system when switching to PIP/PBP

New attempt: downgrading from nvidia 570.124.04 to 570.86.16. I've also reenabled the display power management features. Seems to be okay so far, but I guess I shouldn't declare victory too quickly.

For anyone else who wants to try this: I used this reddit thread as a loose guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … reinstall/

I found the relevant packages by running

pacman -Qs nvidia

... and then downgrading them all using the downgrade helper from AUR.

Note that I also needed to downgrade the kernel to the corresponding version (linux and linux-headers 6.13.4.arch1-1), because it didn't work with the latest kernel.
