Arch Linux Weekly Newsletter

*Jason Chu and Ben Mazer*

  Opening

Welcome to the Arch Linux Newsletter. This attempts to give you an ``at
a glance'' look at the world of Arch Linux.

  News

    This Week in Dev Land

   1. Most of the devs are back, some more battered than others.
Hopefully things will start picking up again soon.
   2. An old bug has come back after we thought we squashed it. A number
of packages were found with bad permissions. A list was created
and they're in the midst of being updated.
   3. A new feature to make supporting multiple architectures easier was
proposed and accepted. Soon you will be able to specify
differences for a specific architecture in PKGBUILD, CARCH.

    Forum Highlights

   1. After much debate, Judd released an Xorg package this week. It's
not official, but may make its way into the repositories. For now
though (due to technical issues), Arch is staying with XFree86.
Grab the package in this thread:
      http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3728.

   2. Once again, numerous threads about problems with GNOME have shot
up this week. They seem to be about about the same problems.
Please search the forum before posting. There is most likely an
      existing thread on your problem.

      TUR Mailing List

User tpowa is looking for sponsorship. I am sponsoring him, and other
TUs may as well. If you would like to become a TU and have submitted
good packages, just send a letter to the TUR mailing list.

    Package Highlights

   1. Version 2.6.5 of the Linux kernel was released this week and
packaged. You can read the changelog here:
      http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.5
   2. Version 0.38 of Inkscape (the sodipodi fork) was released this
week. It has hundreds of bugfixes and even some new features. Read
      the announcement at http://inkscape.org.

  Problems

    FAQ of the Week

    * Q: Why can't I upgrade xfree86? It says ``xfree86 conflicts with
ttf-bitstream-vera. Remove ttf-bitstream-vera?'' and then says
``error: this will break the following dependencies:
      ttf-bitstream-vera: is required by xfree86''

      A: pacman -Rd ttf-bitstream-vera
      pacman -S xfree86

  Closing

Sorry for the delay in the newsletter, the holidays got in the way of
important work ;-). But if you're looking for someone to blame, remember
Arch's mantra: ``If something goes wrong, blame Xentac''.

That's it for this week, stay tuned for more exciting Arch Linux news.
