XFCE 4.4.0 has been released!

If I switch from Xfce4-svn to Xfce 4.4 when it goes in current, will I get the latest version?
Or how does this work?
Regards,
Picpak

You should. Whenever the packagers make packages they will set the proper conflicts=( ). No worries.

Will Xfce4-svn still be updated? (I see it hasn't been updated since November)

Picpak

I'm not sure. I do not maintain the xfce-svn packages or the official xfce packages.

I hope we get this within the week. Can't wait to get my hands on it

Wow, now that comes as a surprise. I was just to figure out how to install the latest xfce4-svn, so that's really great news.
How long does it usually take, until the new packages show up?
Are the maintainers already informed about the news?
I'm a total Arch newbie, installed it yesterday evening for the very first time, and I just made it to the xorg installation, so I still have no DE to work with.
Would it be a bad idea, to install the (old) xfce4-svn now, and to upgrade later, or is it better to wait for the new packages to come?
Will the upgrade from xfce4-svn to the final xfce 4.4 leave any cruft behind, or is this straight forward?
BTW Do you guys use a login-manager for xfce4 (GDM?), and does it bring any other advantages except the nicer look, if I only have xfce4 installed, and no other DEs or WMs?
Offline
Hopefully xfce4-svn will be removed from the unstable repo and testing will upgrade to 4.4.0 and move to current.
From this point it's fairly useless to keep an svn version around, because we're probably going to break some stuff in trunk, which will result in an unstable desktop.
Anyway we're happy 4.4.0 is finally released, you can find a visual tour here, changes from rc2 (you can see why rc2 -> 4.4.0 takes a while
) and of course checkout the new website.

You can try slim, or use a small script in your ~/.bash_profile
if [ "$(tty)" = "/dev/tty1" -o "$(tty)" = "/dev/vc/1" ] ; then
startxfce4

the changelog doesn't work. it worked, while it was on the test server, but it seems you guys forgot to move it ![]()

Working now, baze.
Master One - yes, we are already informed, thanks. As with all packages, when it appears in extra will depend on when the maintainer (neri, in this case) has time to do it.
Similarly, the future of our xfce4-svn packages is up to Shadowhand. He is aware of the potential instability outlined by xerverius.
My recommendation for anyone who doesn't want to wait for the final packages would be to install the rc2 packages currently available in the testing repo, and upgrade to the 4.4 packages when we release them.

Oh, didn't see that there are two versions in the repos (xfce-cvn and RC2 in testing). Of course I meant the RC2 from testing, I remember reading in another thread, that the xfce-svn version is currently broken or not maintained for some time.
changes from rc2 (you can see why rc2 -> 4.4.0 takes a while

Changelog not working ATM (www.xfce.org/documentation shows the folder on the webserver, but no changelogs dir to be found). With "you can see why rc2 -> 4.4.0 takes a while" do you mean the development of XFCE, or the preparation of the 4.4.0 arch packages?
You can try slim, or use a small script in your ~/.bash_profile
Cool, slim lock nice and slim, I think I prefer that one over a simple login from console :-)

If you mean the changelog, then no, it's still not working.

So does neri already know about the news?

Yes, I think I can't wait any longer, because I have nothing else installed on my ThinkPad by now except the base and xorg. So if it does not cause any troubles or cruft afterwards, I'm gonna install RC2 from testing now, hopefully it is just a simple update then, when 4.4.0 hits current.

We had some problems getting the new website running on some of the mirrors (1 of them had/has a broken dns, but it takes 3hour to get it out of the dns pool or apply some of the changes. The Xfce admin knows and is working on it.). Fothermore: the servers sync automatically
.
You can try this one:

O man I'm torn in two -- I can't wait to finally upgrade to xfce 4.4, been waiting so long .. on the other hand, I got an exam this wednesday so some part of me hopes the packages won't be available 'till wednesday evening otherwise I'll never pass that exam .. but then again .. I want 4.4! :-P

just install my packages manually then.
practically they are the final 4.4 builds. there haven't been any changes between the tagging and the release.
when 4.4 appears in arch's repos, just remove all with pacman -Rs xfce4-svn and install the non-svn packages.

Wow 4.4.0 in extra btw.. Too fast lol ![]()

which server owns xfce4.4? i can only download 4.2 from ftp.archlinux.org
Offline
wait for the servers to sync. no need to be impatient.
thx to neri for providing the packages only 1 day after the release
edit: btw thunar-volman 0.1.2-1 pkg description says create and deflate archives in thunar but its actually The Thunar Volume Manager is an extension for the Thunar file manager, which enables automatic management of removable drives and media. For example, if thunar-volman is installed and configured properly, and you plug in your digital camera, it will automatically launch your preferred photo application and import the new pictures from the camera into your photo collection. as it says in the the site.. http://foo-projects.org/~benny/projects/thunar-volman/
didnt feel like filling a bug report for this
edit2: also what about xarchiver being seperately also in [community] ?
There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

according to the mailing list, xarchiver will be seeing some major changes and thus is not stable enough to be included in xfce 4.4. Too bad, but it can be installed separately so no worries ![]()

Wow 4.4.0 in extra btw.. Too fast lol
So how do I install it?
kim@komputer:~$ sudo pacman -S extra/xfce4
xfce4: not present in "extra" repositoryRegards,
Picpak

xfce4 is actually a group name - see them all with the command "pacman -Sg"
As such, "xfce4" itself won't show up as a package in any repos. And anyway, 4.4 still hasn't synched to most of the mirrors yet, wait a day or so. Then when you try to install xfce4 (pacman -S xfce4) it will ask you if you want to install all the packages specified by that group.
Offline
Oh, so xfce4 will get the latest version regardless of the repo it comes from?
nvm though, I got it working. Missing a few icons, but that's it.

I just did a fresh install, so I decided to go for xfce-4.4 stable instead of svn...
There are a lot of annoying things... The settings aren't the same as in the svn version... For example, many items show up under the settings menu, but when i open the settings window, only the plain old default 4.2 ones appear.
Also, I'm missing a freaking ton of icons, and it's very very annoying. I have installed tango, and tango extras, as well as icon-naming-utils, and still, I'm missing icons. :S
The icon naming seems to have changed as well, whereas before, for example, I could type 'home' and it'd show the home folder icon, now I have to type home_folder.
Sadly... I honestly thing svn was better. My DPI appears to be different than in svn as well, even though I used the same xorg config file as with my old install. :S
This is a fresh install, so am I the only one having issues? ![]()
