Low Tx-Power (3 dBm) on MT7921U USB WiFi Adapter – Is it Normal?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a USB WiFi adapter (AX3000 with the MT7921U chipset) based on a recommendation I found in a GitHub post. My computer detects it and I can use it without any problems for general internet use.

However, the Tx-Power is limited to 3 dBm, and I was hoping to use this adapter with aircrack-ng, but I'm starting to think it might not be suitable for that purpose due to the low power output.

That's why I'm posting here – to ask if this low Tx-Power is normal for this chipset, or if there's any way to increase it. Or maybe I just need to get a different adapter for my intended use?

I've already changed the regulatory domain. Here's the output of iw reg get:

global
country BZ: DFS-JP
    (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 30), (N/A)
    (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A)

And here’s the output from iw config:

IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"????"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:5.765 GHz  Access Point: 86:AA:9C:0B:27:8B
          Bit Rate=780 Mb/s   Tx-Power=3 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on
          Link Quality=70/70  Signal level=-31 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

And here’s the output of ethtool -i:

        driver: mt7921u
        version: 6.14.2-arch1-1
        firmware-version: ____010000-20241106151045
        expansion-rom-version:
        bus-info: 4-2:1.0
        supports-statistics: yes
        supports-test: no
       supports-eeprom-access: no
       supports-register-dump: no
       supports-priv-flags: no

I hope I’m not bothering anyone with this question or the intention behind it. Please be kind — I’m new here.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Low Tx-Power (3 dBm) on MT7921U USB WiFi Adapter – Is it Normal?

I have the exact same question. My MT7921u wifi adapter is showing 3dBm tx-power, but I kind of think maybe this is incorrect because the adapter still seems to pick up wifi networks very well. I would love to know the answer to this though.
