OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

I have a weird behavior where after a window becomes the 3rd most recently used, KDE just forgets where it should be when alttabing. I've only noticed this happen when I'm running something like gzdoom. xf86-video-amdgpu driver is not installed.

I get this in the xorg log:

[ 82867.702] (WW) modeset(0): Present-flip: queue async flip during flip on CRTC 0 failed: Invalid argument
[ 82867.756] (WW) modeset(0): Present-flip: queue async flip during flip on CRTC 0 failed: Invalid argument
[ 82867.782] (WW) modeset(0): Present-flip: detected too frequent flip errors, disabling logs until frequency is reduced
[ 82869.347] (WW) modeset(0): flip queue retry
[ 82869.959] (WW) modeset(0): flip queue retry

Wayland doesn't have this problem, but I don't want to use it.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

I've only noticed this happen when I'm running something like gzdoom.

Is it maybe more "fullscreen" than "opengl"?
The WM should be entirely oblivious to the window contents.

Or is this a purely visual thing?
Does it happen if you suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12)?

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

No, it still happens when it's windowed.

It doesn't happen when the compositor is suspended.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

So it's just the rendering (also makes more sense that only GL clients are affected)
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and the output of

qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation

Do you DRI_PRIME=1 the relevant GL clients?
Does it make a difference?

Disable those.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

No difference.

Disabling effects doesn't help.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

KDE just forgets where it should be when alttabing

For clarification: does this concern the stack order (ie. the window is stuck on the foreground or doesn't make it there) or the geometry (the window is always painted in the topleft corner, not where it's supposed to be)?

glPreferBufferSwap: AutoSwapStrategy

kwin probably allows you to force full repints - does that prevent the problem?

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

The stack order. It drops to the bottom of it.

I don't have that option for some reason.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

Seems you get to choose between OpenGL and QPainter, https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/bl … s.cpp#L640 and everything else in that list is just stale features of yesteryear…

The window dropping to the bottom of the stack (of regular windows) but still above the desktop window (I assume?) sounds more like a kwin/compositor bug than a driver one. But the opengl dependency is weird. Is glxgears also affected?
When this happens, does toggling the compositor off and on "fix" it (at least temporarily)?

Does alt+tab involve any cycling GUI (the presentwindows/exposé thing, or just some tabbox) or does it only change the stack order?

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

Yeah, glxgears can also cause this.

No, it doesn't.

Yes, it's also shown in the GUIs.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

So it's not only visual (doesn't fix) but requires the compositor to be triggered => disable whatever effect you use for window switching.

That doesn't fix the issue.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

Just so we're clear: once the window has been dropped to the bottom of the stack, it remains there even if you suspend the compositor afterwards (ie. while the compositor isn't active)?
Does it still show up in "wmctrl -l" resp. can you then "wmctrl -a" it?

* run glxgears
* dump xprop -root
* dump xwininfo and xprop for glxgears (click the window)
* trigger the issue
* dump xprop -root and for glxgears again

(Though none of this frankly makes any sense - GL clients not properly masked while GL compositing, sure. KWin losing random windwows, maybe. KWin losing only GL windows only when the compositor is kinda nuts)

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

This doesn't only affect GL windows. The issue just only appears when there's a GL window running.

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

Sorry, the relevant window related output would then have been for whatever ends up on the bottom of the stack.

I'd suppose that the GL context of that window somhow™ delays kwin's compositor context, thus kwin - resulting in kwin somehow™ "loses" a window.
Fill in the blanks…

If you run glxgears w/o vsync

vblank_mode=0 glxgears

can it still trigger this?

What if you run

vblank_mode=0 kwin_x11 --replace

this way?

Yes to both.

Should I report this?

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

This is a kwin bug for sure - it should™ not "lose" (track of) windows.

Compositing Type: OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: AMD
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon Graphics (radeonsi, renoir, ACO, DRM 3.61, 6.13.8-arch1-1)
OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.3-arch1.1
…
Refresh Rate: 165003
Adaptive Sync: incapable
[ 82867.782] (WW) modeset(0): Present-flip: detected too frequent flip errors, disabling logs until frequency is reduced

Do you also get this when running the output at 60Hz?

allowTearing: true

btw. suggests that kwin already runs unsynced (but is probably not true since those values seem residuals and not to reflect any code anymore)

Re: OpenGL apps break Alt+Tab on KDE

The output gets corrupted at 60Hz for some reason.

I've reported the bug:
