Gfortran

Is Gfortran a true Fortran compiler (as opposed to a Fortran to C converter)? If so, is it F77 compatible and compliant? How stable is it?

Re: Gfortran

It is a true compiler. The package depends on gcc so it might use gcc to do the linking. It is F77 compatible. I've used it to build several large packages without any issues and it is used to build stuff in extra.  For more info, you should check out the project page on gnu.org.
