i3 workspaces broke

I have this really weird problems with i3 workspaces, or the displaying of them in polybar and i3bar.

I just wanted to change the workspace names, first in the config via `set $ws1 "1:ext1" which did not work as expected. Then I tried it with `i3-msg "rename workspace $ws1 to ext1". But it all fucked up my polybar. So I changed everything back, put my i3 config backup in place -- but now my polybar showed me only the focused workspaces (on my two monitors) as well as workspaces, were windows are open, but where the workspace is not in focus. First I thought it's polybar, but i3bar has the same shitty issue. I tried restarting the pc, I tried `i3-msg reload`, I tried `i3-msg exit`... and I have no clue, what it could be. It worked before so resetting all configs and restarting the pc should have set it all back, shouldn't it?

First post, so I do not know, if I can post images here, and am a little bit too frustrated trying to solve the issue the last hour to find out.

Maybe there was already an Issue like this, but I could not really find it. If someone can help me, that would be great.

imgur.com, you probably also want to post the i3 config, maybe there's a problem with the names and stripping numbers?
