journalctl stops before saving any kernel ops or error when trying to exec 6.14.4-arch1-2.

So indeed I'm not sure if it is a kernel panic or any systemd crash with these kernel.

journalctl stops before saving any kernel ops or error when trying to exec 6.14.4-arch1-2.

So indeed I'm not sure if it is a kernel panic or any systemd crash with these kernel.

I have exactly kernel oops as you, downgrading to 6.14.4-arch1-1 works, really appreciate that

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

I had the same kernel oops after upgrading to 6.14.4-arch1-2 on a Dell precision 5680. Downgrading to 6.14.4-arch1-1 again also worked for me.

That is quite curious, as this is just a rebuild of the kernel with the new version of GCC .. Do you have any out-of-tree modules loaded?

Edit: Oh I should have checked the logs, you have! Then you'll need to rebuild them for the new version of the kernel smile

I don't use any out-of-tree modules, at least that I am aware of. To me it seems to be related to the IPU6 module, which I guess should be an in-tree module?

This stack trace is from trying to boot with 6.14.4-arch1-2 on my machine.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

This was the reason I mentioned out of tree modules:

ohaagh wrote:
apr 30 22:22:07 D9330 kernel: Tainted: [O]=OOT_MODULE, [E]=UNSIGNED_MODULE

Can you trigger the bug reliably?

Also could you test the latest mainline kernel?

sudo pacman -U https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/linux-mainline-6.15rc4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Depending on your system's boot mechanism you need to manually add an entry for linux-mainline.

I am not sure this is the issue. I have the same problem on my computer (Dell XPS 9640), and I have the nvidia-open out of tree module installed.
However, I am using the dkms version, so it is rebuilt at each kernel update.

I just tried and made sure the module is indeed rebuilt, and I have the kernel panic at boot time.

The trace looks similar to the one provided by ohaagh :

kernel BUG at lib/string_helpers.c:1040!
Oops: invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMT NOPTI

I only have a picture of it, it did not save on storage. I can provide it if needed.

That is quite curious, as this is just a rebuild of the kernel with the new version of GCC .. Do you have any out-of-tree modules loaded?

Edit: Oh I should have checked the logs, you have! Then you'll need to rebuild them for the new version of the kernel smile

In my case the only out of tree kernel that I'm aware of is the virtualbox one. Now I switched to virtualbox dkms so it should rebuild automatically, isn't it?

All four kernels (arch, lts, zen, hardened) give the same error.
Disabling the webcam (an ipu6 that in any case does not work because is only partially recognized), the arch kernel works again.

In my case, everything works with the 6.14.5rc1 kernel in your repo.

I cannot really test the 6.15 branch as the nvidia-open module does not yet build with it.

Yes, I can trigger the bug reliably.

Latest mainline kernel does not trigger the bug.

Also, doing a little bit of research it seems like it is a known bug for which a patch has already been submitted: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20250429161 … ation.org/

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

I had the same issue this morning updating the Kernel to 6.14.4-1-2 on my XPS 9340. The system doesn't boot anymore and reinstalling Arch does not solve it.

I did that and the entire system broke. I only downgraded the kernel package, not any of the other packages like linux-headers or others. I used something like:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-6.14.4.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

An older XPS 9305 is working fine on the new kernel btw.

Disabling the webcam (an ipu6 that in any case does not work because is only partially recognized), the arch kernel works again.

Disabling the camera in the BIOS made all kernels working again.
Moreover to get rid of all messages I've backlisted the webcam sensor and ipu6 modeule by creating the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file with these two lines:

install intel_skl_int3472_discrete /bin/false
install intel_ipu6 /bin/false

now everything seems to work , no warning messages in jopurnalctl and dmesg except the following expected errors:

...

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

Xwang you legend. My 9340 is booting into the clean install now after disabling the webcam from the BIOS.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

I am experiencing the same issue with a Dell XPS 9440. Disabling the camera from BIOS also worked for me, thanks! It didn't worked for me before either so not a huge loss.

Isn't it strange that only dell laptops have this issue?

Re: Dell XPS 9320 Kernel panic after fresh installation

Same problem here on Dell Latitude 7440. No kernel panics, just some hardware not working properly, and veeeeery long boot due to waiting for various systemd timeouts.
Thank you ohaagh for the link to the kernel bug/patch, that's it.
I downgraded back to 6.14.4-arch1-1 for now, all is fine with that one. The next kernel version bump should have the fix in.
