Overall translation progress template

I think it would be useful to have a template that shows percentage bar of translated packages for a given language and category. It can be shown on main ArchWiki Translation Team page for all languages instead of that pages table that nobody actually used, and each language team could use this template on their own pages to show overall progress and per-category progress.
The percentage will be counted simply by ratio of english pages to created translated pages, probably with checking that all of them have english counterpart. It also has to be recursive, counting subcategories as translated only after all pages and subcategories in them are translated.
And it can respect translation status template to also show "needs", "in progress" or "bad" part of the percentage, but that might require addition of "in progress" and "completed" translation statuses.
Maybe another template that just returns a string with percentage would be useful.

So, for example, category English has 8 sub-categories, and some Language also has 8 created sub-categories, but after recursive checks it turns out that only 7 of them are fully translated. Therefore overall translation status for this language would be 7/8=87.5%, and that will be shown in place of template with a nice progress bar. Let's say that one of the categories is also out of date entirely so that can be shown as 12.5% of bad translation, on top of overall progress with another color.
Or another Language has only 7 sub-categories created and 6 translated, so it will have only 75% of the translation progress - not created sub-category or page is counted as not translated.

I'm don't really know browser-related programming or MediaWiki, so I don't know how to do such a thing.
I feel like it will require a bot that periodically updates all templates and that definitely puts this idea out of my reach as I don't have rights to create that bot, from what I know.

What do you think?

Re: Overall translation progress template

What is your end goal with this?

Keep in mind translations are a moving target: new pages are created regularly (e.g. laptop pages) so I don't think any translation team would ever achieve 100%.

There's also the issue of defining what a "complete" translation is: once again it's a moving target as the regular changes need to be translated eventually.
For example, even if all the French pages were created when I was still active in the translation effort, I would not say the wiki is 100% translated to French if these pages stay frozen forever in their 2022 state.

This is also possibly counter-productive, as you aim the translation team effort on low-impact pages which would rob manpower for keeping high-traffic pages up to date: e.g. some translations have not touched their main page since 2013.

Re: Overall translation progress template

The goal is simple - to improve communication. As of right now it is quite hard to grasp the state of the translation, especially if you haven't been involved before. I myself got quite lost figuring out just how bad is the state of Ukranian translation - a near 0 percentage would give it to me at a glance) And this would also provide goals and dopamine hits "We translated all off the templates!"

I agree that counting all pages in category is not an ideal way of doing that, but it will work great for more static categories, like Pacman. And I did not find a better way to do it automatically without creating complicated logic, but feel free to prove me wrong.

As for pages being outdated, it can be shown here too, as another percentage bar on top of overall one. It will require the addition of template Translation:Outdated that would be automatically added to pages that lag behind certain number of major changes in english version.

Didn't find a way to post a file here, so brace yourself for Imgur: https://i.imgur.com/x4tsLD6.jpeg
I posted there an image of how this template might look like.
Green represents translated pages, gray not translated, striped yellow is outdated pages and striped pink is pages with translation in progress.

On that note, do you know another service like pastebin, but for images? Imgur always bothered me.

I must admit I don't have a better solution to get at a glance the state of a translation. The Spanish translation team had a table at some point but it has not been kept up to date. Maybe having a central place with the raw number of pages using the "TranslationStatus (Language)" template would be a good first approximation? For out of date translations, we have a "Translateme" and "Bad translation" template but they're rarely used.

I have no idea how to translate that visual into a template, but you're welcome to have at it in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Template:Sandbox and open a talk item in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Help_talk:I18n to let everyone know you intend to create a new template smile

I'm partial to https://0x0.st/ for short-lived hosting.

Re: Overall translation progress template

There is https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Template:Progressbar that could be used, but since there's no automated process to update its value, you'd need to update it manually.
