HDMI output not working if TV off at boot or on/off

Sorry for the confusing title...

I am experiencing an issue for which my TV sees no output from my nvidia card it the TV is off before the machine boots, or if I turn the TV off and then back on again. I have looked around in the forum, and found various people with a similar issue but I was not able to apply the solutions to my specific use case.

As a workaround, switching ttys witch ctrl+alt+F2/F1 triggers something and I get back display output, which is great and I can live with that, I am just curious as I would like to understand how to debug and fix this.

I am using gnome on wayland, nvidia card with proprietary drivers. I did not see anything particular in the journal logs, not from gdm or anything else for that matter.
