any thoughts on what i found? anybody think it would b worth a wiki entry? maybe a hal section?

Absolutely!  I never needed to munge hal rules to get my ipod working, but I did have to get down and dirty with udev on several occasions.

I'm sorry if my earlier post came off as harsh - I certainly didn't mean it to.  My point was that you level of frustration was obvious, but I think many people were having a hard time answering your questions the way they were posed.  I hope there are no hard feelings since, again, I certainly didn't mean to slam you.

Believe me, I understand how frustrating ipods and linux can be.  I even wrote a perl script to help me with it, and used gnupod for around 6 months because of all the issues I was having with device nodes, unmounting, and ejecting from the gui.  I still rarely ever see an ipod icon on my desktop (I used to 75% more of the time).  At this point, I just use amarok and the mounting portion of my perl script to deal with my ipod.

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

odd because in amarok iPod mounts ok ... if it knows where to look

Banshee well nothing

Exaile is about the best so far mounts writes no problem [much lighter than amarok]

for Photos I use pythoPhotoPod

videos gtkpod

I have a udev rule to set device node in /dev do pmount /dev/ipod is all I do [/media/ipod]

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

I too would like some documentation on configuring hal. I've searched for such a tutorial and cannot find a good one for any distribution. This makes it really difficult to get automatic device events working properly.

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

No hard feelings. linux is a community and we should never be divided. all is forgiven.

i think we have determined a wiki is in order. at this point we need to decide if we want a whole page dedicated to the ipod and another for other hal configs or combine them. i'm going to start a page for general hal setup and see where that goes.

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

I've tried everything suggested about HAL in this forum and it still would not mount my usb player. It use to mount with hotplug but since HAL, nothing,
it works fine on Mandriva.

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

the player is a Sorrell sf10000, sf2000, iRiverT30 UMS mode, and even tried my friend's rca player too. I get a "feature only available with HAL" using KDE. I have to do a mknod to create /dev/sda1. It worked with hotplug and the very first HAL.

Re: Ubuntu device management in Arch

don't have time to research that right now but i'll def. try to look for something for u l8r

as a result of this post i'm dumping arch on my laptop. this means i'll be squeezing as much user friendly features out of arch as possible since my friends usually are the ones using my laptop. what about gnome-network tools? this is what ubuntu uses for network config and lots of other stuff in the system>administration. the one in unstable is really outdate. i think this package needs some attention. there was a 2.17 release VERY recently (jan. 22). when i get a chance i'm going to try to build it. anybody want to beat me to it?

arch package http://archlinux.org/packages/8867/
project page http://www.gnome.org/projects/gst/
release page http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ … tem-tools/

it's just knowing that i can do everything ubuntu can do on arch AND it's up to date. not to mention i can actually install what i want with my own repo :-D. long live arch!
