[SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Hello, I've recently reinstalled Arch on my laptop and whenever I launch a game so that it uses my nvidia graphics card via prime, it will launch in full screen (expected) but will only show a black screen. I will then have to navigate to the in game settings to switch it out of full-screen to be able to see graphics. I am able to do this by watching the program in the minimized taskbar window which will have graphics rendered properly. I have done the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Run games (Terraria via steam, since I have experience with it running fine in the past) purely off of integrated graphics in full screen to verify they work. They will, however when I add the game options to run the game with my dedicated graphics card (via the "__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%" options). This again returns a black full-screen.

  • Verified my Nvidia graphics card is on when running with Nvidia prime options.

  • Tried running games outside of steam via the heroic games launcher and lutris. This game me the same result.

  • Tried running games with gamescope, this returned minor success with some games running fullscreen for < 10 seconds before freezing. Other games would freeze immediately. Running "gamescope -- vkcube" core dumps with:

    gamescope: ../src/rendervulkan.cpp:2145: bool CVulkanTexture::BInit(uint32_t, uint32_t, uint32_t, uint32_t, createFlags, wlr_dmabuf_attributes*, uint32_t, uint32_t, CVulkanTexture*, gamescope::OwningRc<gamescope::IBackendFb>): Assertion `modifiers.size() > 0' failed.
[1] 13149 IOT instruction (core dumped) gamescope -- vkcube
  • I have verified I have verified that the DRM kernel mode enabled

    sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
    Y

Here is some of my system information:

OS: Arch Linux x86_64
Host: XPS 15 9510
Kernel: Linux 6.14.7-arch2-1
DE: KDE Plasma 6.3.5
WM: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-11900H (16) @ 4.90 GHz
GPU 1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Mobile [Discrete]
GPU 2: Intel UHD Graphics @ 1.45 GHz [Integrated]
Nvidia driver: "nvidia-open", Note have tried this on the regular "nvidia" drivers as well.

After trying to find similar issues from this forum and online I have found nothing that has helped and I am not really sure what else to do from here, so any help is appreciated. If there are any logs or files you would like me to provide then let me know. This is also my first post so if I have broken any of the etiquette and or rules then please let me know so I can fix it.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Do you have the lib32-nvidia-utils package installed? If so, what options are you using with gamescope when launching? Does that black screen have game sound or anything of the sort or does it just hang?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Yes the following package is installed

lib32-nvidia-utils

As for gamescope I've tried these options, experimenting with removing some of them (--expose-wayland, --backend sdl, and -F nis)

gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 60 --expose-wayland --backend sdl -F nis --

granted I can't get most to even launch this way. With gamescope I might get some audio before it too freezes, however without it I get perfect audio.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

So games work just fine in windowed mode? Try setting the vars

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia

and running your web browser e.g.

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia firefox

in terminal and try full-screening that.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

I've used those vars to run my games but with the addition of the "%command%" in steam. However just to sure I tried and unfortunately the same result. I tried it with firefox too, there I was able to see a full screen both in youtube and via the F11 key. However, both ran incredibly poorly with about 5fps if I had to guess.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

%command% is a Steam specific flag that is just swapped in by the executable path on runtime, you're just passing env vars through in the case of Firefox. If you're having performance issues in Firefox this is most certainly a issue with drivers. Did you remove kms from the initramfs and regenerate them?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Thank you for explaining that! As for the other topic, yes kms was already removed, I did try regenerating with "mkinitcpio -P" just to be sure and rebooted. However I am still experiencing the same issues. Here are the hooks I have in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

# Removed kms hook
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect microcode modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block encrypt lvm2 filesystems fsck)

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Try booting with the nomodeset kernel parameter. Note this will break Wayland for the time being, so you'll have to use X11.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Removing this stopped me from getting into SDDM, the last few lines on the screen showed this

kernel: evdi: [1] (card1) Opened by Task 1061 (Xorg) of process 1061 (Xorg)
kernel: evdi: [1] (card1) Closed by Task 1061 (Xorg) of process 1061 (Xorg)
kernel: evdi: [1] (card2) Opened by Task 1061 (Xorg) of process 1061 (Xorg)
kernel: evdi: [1] (card2) Closed by Task 1061 (Xorg) of process 1061 (Xorg)

After removing "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" too I was able to get into X11. Steam would no longer launch, but I tried running firefox like before and full screen worked fine, however it seems a bit ambiguous if my graphics card is running. System monitor (GUI for KDE) reports no GPU usage, but this shows the graphics card being active regardless of if firefox was running with the respective vars.

cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status [0]
active

And I see no increase from the suspended time by running the command

cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_suspended_time [0]

This is my bad, I neglected to mention that this needed be removed too, though fwiw, this is now the default, so you can remove it permanently. Steam not launching is very odd, as it's a native X app anyway and runs under Xwayland. What does it say if you run it through the terminal?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Well that's odd. You have Xwayland installed right? I assume so because you wouldn't have been able to use steam without it. Does it exhibit the same exact issues on other distros? You can try removing the .steam folder from your ~ and running it under X again.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Yep I do have Xwayland installed, I don't have any other distros installed so I haven't tried it on them. I have removed .steam from my home directory and ran steam again via the terminal, it produced the same result. Tomorrow I'm going to try the fullscreen application on another WM/compositor to see if KDE might be the problem (don't see why it would be, but might as well check). I'll update this thread with my findings, until then thank you for sticking with me and helping me cmt! smile

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Just tried with the Gnome compositor, full screen applications work fine with the graphics card. So I assume this is now more of a KDE issue than an nvidia issue. However, I still really prefer KDE over gnome so if anyone has any ideas on how to get this to work then please let me know

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Remove the "nomodeset" parameter and restore "nvidia_drm.modeset=1"
kms is a prerequisite for any kind of sane GUI (nomodeset is an absolutely last resort if you don't get any output at all, not even on the multi-user.target) and nvidia_drm.modeset, while default and mandatory for wayland, doubles to block the simpledrm device what prevents you from accidentally running on software emulation and maintain normal card order on hybrid systems (othewise nvidia can turn card0 and intel card1)

Then please post the outputs of

qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation
glxinfo -B
prime-run glxinfo -B

Do you get the same w/ plasma on X11?
For gnome,

loginctl session-status

to make sure you actually tested that on wayland because of the previous errands and gnome being super-picky about when it allows you to run on wayland.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

Sure thing, I have restored nvidia_drm.modeset=1 and removed nomodeset. I don't think you are telling me to re-enable the kms hook, and since the Nvidia wiki states to take it off I have left it in that state. Here are the outputs you have requested.

diff tells me they are for the most part simular (excluding things like other displays and where is explicitly mentions X11/Wayland)

As for the other part, yep Gnome is running on Wayland

I did reconfirm after running this that full screen applications work on Gnome. Thank you for your help!

What happens if you disable the two external outputs?
Also please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General (you don't have to run another X11 session, I just want to see where they're attached)
Also, for clarification: does fullscreen steam work on X11 in this configuration (even w/ the external outputs)?

seth wrote:

Remove the "nomodeset" parameter and restore "nvidia_drm.modeset=1"
kms is a prerequisite for any kind of sane GUI (nomodeset is an absolutely last resort if you don't get any output at all, not even on the multi-user.target) and nvidia_drm.modeset, while default and mandatory for wayland, doubles to block the simpledrm device what prevents you from accidentally running on software emulation and maintain normal card order on hybrid systems (othewise nvidia can turn card0 and intel card1)

This was totally my bad, sorry.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

When I disable both external monitors the game is forced to run on my laptop monitor and it works! After testing this I reconnected the monitors and tried running just on my laptop monitor and fullscreen nvidia works fine there, however the problem still persists on my external monitors when on KDE Wayland. I tried on KDE X11 and now fullscreen is working just fine on there too with or without the external monitors. This is strange as I though last night I didn't have it working. As for the external displays they are connected via a Dell Docking station via the displaylink and the evdi (evdi is obtained via the AUR) packages. Other than that here are the logs you requested

The eDP is on the intel IGP, nothing attached to nvidia and the problem is likely the EVDI support on wayland?

Does exporting  KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1 or WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1 (or both) help here?

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

I've tried both vars and for the most part it does not change anything, except for one game "Lethal Company" and exclusively when I am in a menu with  KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1 exported. If I try to interact with anything outside of a menu I get the black screen again. Now I can hear myself moving around in the game so I know the game isn't freezing outside of menus. This game does open an additional process in the taskbar called "OpenGL", but I believe that is typical behavior for the most part.

The working menu likely shows you a cursor? And otherwise the cursor will be grabbed/hidden/whatever (common for games - you've a crosshair wink )
The DisplayLink bug isn't particularly active, but this seems also https://github.com/DisplayLink/evdi/issues/484

Re: [SOLVED] Nvida Prime + Wayland full-screen applications black screen.

That bug seems pretty close to mine. Out of curiosity I have a small adapter for HDMI to my primary monitor, sure enough when I plug it in full-screen games run just fine on it. So I guess for the time being I'll just use my adapter and periodically test the packages as they update. Since there is not much else to be done I'll look into what I need to do to close out this thread. Thank you all for your help! smile

[SOLUTION]
Displaylink drivers don't play well with full-screen via a computer's graphics card on KDE (wayland). Use an adapter that doesn't require displaylink, try a different compositor like gnome, or wait for a displaylink/evdi update that might fix this issue.
