I connected the wireless kb to my work laptop (arch). It shut down in a few minutes.
Fwiw, don't use a ROG Falchion if you are experiencing random shutdowns in arch/Linux...
Thanks everyone for the help, I wonder if this is a kernel/driver bug, I'm guessing the system shuts down when the keyboard goes into power saving mode, so there's some signal there that is either wrong or gets misinterpreted by the kernel.
I had this kb connected to the new pc but didn't use it. I'm guessing it wakes up on boot, then eventually powers down and takes the system with it.

well - I'm a bit puzzle about how to reply as the solution raises way more questions than it provides answers
- is it the keyboard sending something when its about to power down?
- is it the receiver which triggers some event when it loses the signal from the keyboards sender?
- no matter which of those two: why in the first place?
- aside from linux seem to behave correctly in terms of it respects the power down command - why had windows not?
- why does it already causes the install environment to shutdown when power management is something that one would expect from a full desktop only?
- is this behaviour documented anywhere? asus' own product page only provides a hefty 11mb 2-page quickstart flip
I remember a YT-video where a faulty power/reset button was the cause (wasn't able to find it again) - but who the hell would have thought about some usb device triggers what looks like a hardware event to the kernel?

Yeah, I only remembered about the keyboard being connected when redoing all the cabling to see if something was messed up.
Once the shutdowns went away I started vaguely remembering similar issues with ROG laptops on Linux (I'm a member in the ROG Linux dev discord). Sending unexpected signals seems to be a thing (some) Asus keyboards do, whether integrated in a laptop or standalone...
A quick Google shows I'm certainly not the only person with this issue :shrug:
