Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone,

I'm Tommahs, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I’ve been using Linux since 2008 (started with Slackware), and moved to Arch around 2009. What drew me to Arch was the ability — and my drive — to really understand how everything works under the hood. That’s something I’ve always valued and that curiosity still defines my approach to tech.

I work in IT with a focus on open-source, DevSecOps, and building distributed systems. My day-to-day involves a mix of tools you’d typically find in larger environments, and I mostly work with Python, Bash, Go, and JavaScript. Lately, I’ve been focusing on Kubernetes and exploring LLM-related tooling.

While I don’t maintain open-source projects, I try to contribute where I can. I maintain a small AUR repository for company-specific packages, and I’d like to give back to the Arch community in whatever ways are sustainable.

My setup is pretty lean: Arch with i3, alacritty, zsh, and (guilty as charged) VS Code. I’m so used to my environment that switching to macOS or Windows easily knocks 30–40% off my productivity.

Outside of tech, I really enjoy disappearing offline for a few days — usually camping in the woods with no screens, no signal, just fresh air and a campfire.

Looking forward to being part of the community.

– Tommahs

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone

I first heard about Arch in a joke 8 years ago, it was about Arch users that only use tty and only launch window manager when they need it, and now I am becoming this kind of user. I was going to get to Linux eventually, so I installed arch couple of months ago and have been customizing it in free time. I really like the idea of DIY, so Arch looked like a good idea.

Although it was a bit scary to write my own bash scripts for basic stuff like volume control (i use raw bspwm), but it is becoming more and more fun. Also, I just got a glimpse of this amazing community, because I was having an issue with my last script and I was given detailed explanation why it won't work and even couple of different approaches.

So, anyway, I am glad to become part of this great community. Hopefully I will also help some newbies one day.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, let me introduce myself, my name is Zaid from Indonesia

This is my first time entering a forum like this so maybe I will make mistakes later. I started my journey in Linux since 2015 when my laptop was very heavy running a common operating system. And I used to try Ubuntu and for me as a layman it was quite easy to use. For years I tried to work and learn in Linux as my main operating system. Until I felt like trying another operating system that I could configure and choose what I installed and what I didn't need and my relative suggested Arch Linux lately. After I tried and ran some troubleshooting a little and finally I was able to use Arch Linux for my daily use and I was amazed by the performance and ease of Arch Linux. And I think in the future I will not move to another distro except to just try it.

Still I don't understand too deeply because I can only use ordinary scripts that are very common and many people know. At least the documentation or wiki that is abundant and complete really helps me in learning. Easy to understand language and explanations that make it easy for laymen to learn.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi! My name is Rhey'ven (pronounced: Raven) I live in Texas, US.

I was an off and on again user of Linux since the early 2000's. First install I did was Mandrake 4.0! I think I still have the CD somewhere even. Linux was always this alternative thing that I would tinker around will for years before running it as a side OS on all of my laptops and Win 7 as my desktop OS. I was a side user of Linux until Steam came out with Proton. I jumped on hard with that diving into Linux Mint XFCE and that became my main OS for years. So of course now as a full time Linux user,  I listened to the whispers of internet lore that spoke of the all mighty Arch Linux and didn't feel prepared at all. I eventually dabbled in Manjaro and liked what it had to offer. After a few months of messing around with it, I bricked my install and was not able to recover it. After a data backup, I went back to Mint and stayed there happily.

A few months later I finally hit a point of anger with my Android phone, so I deiced to pick up a PinePhone and run it as a daily driver device. I distro hopped for a month or two, but the one I enjoyed the most was the Arch install. It was a fun experience and actually made me feel a sense of pride for figuring it out. Watching it boot Plasma Mobile the first time made me smile so big. After a couple of months of telling myself it was a usable device, I did end up back on my Pixel and realized I needed to stay there as I had a missed voicemail from a month before from my Mother.

But the story doesn't end there! Ho boy it doesn't! I jumped back on Manjaro. Full sail. I ripped my old GPU out of my desktop and I got an eGPU dock and grabbed a old laptop with thunderbolt and hit it full sail. It had some hiccups, but overall, I had a great experience. I ran it solid for a few months and learned a lot about Arch to the point where I became confident in my abilities, understanding what basic commands meant and how to do things if I needed to fix anything. I was quite confident. But then came the plauge, an update that borked my install and I had to do a restore. But that wasn't working and this and that...

So I bought a new SSD and decided to install Arch. I had stuff on the old SSD I didn't want to lose. I plunged in, found a guide that had most of what I wanted in it, and what it didn't cover, I looked up. and I got it up and running! I've got a few small issues here and there that I am trying to figure out, and that's what brought me here today.

Thank you for taking the time to read my goofy little tale. I'm excited to be here and hopefully figure out some of my issues.

I have made a decision to be more involved with the community and even maybe contribute and do something worthwhile so if anything pops up let me know! .... so I guess I use arch btw..

Hi y'all! Feels good to be back I must say. I have been dabbling with the linux on and off the last 15 years - mostly on though. So I see myself as a competent idiot, that might get something right and then trash my system right after. Hope I can contribute with something!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey folks,

I'm BluntEXE—but if it's easier just call me Blunt smile I’m a 30 something guy who has a 9-5 job and a lot to learn. I'm still pretty new to Arch, but I’ve dabbled with other distros here and there—mainly Arch-based ones like Manjaro and Endeavour OS. At some point, I realised I was using a lot of distros built on Arch without ever getting hands-on with the real thing. So, I grabbed a laptop, installed Arch and decided to dive in! The way I saw it, this was my chance to experiment without the fear of breaking my main setup.

What pulled me into Arch was its DIY philosophy. Problem-solving is a huge part of my everyday work, so the idea of building and customising my system exactly how I want it really appealed to me. I love tweaking things, optimising my workflow, and making my setup truly mine—Arch felt like the perfect fit for that.

I came to the forums because, outside of work, I don’t get much interaction with others. I figured it was about time I find some like-minded people to chat with, share experiences with and learn from. Of course, I’ll ask for help if I feel I truly need it, but I’m also the kind of person who digs deep before reaching out—Nothing beats the feeling of breaking something, figuring out how things work and rebuilding. That sense of accomplishment is a feeling I just can't describe.

Anyway, I'll stop waffling now. I look forward to getting to know folks here and who knows, I may even make some new friends big_smile

Cheers!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all, nice to be here.
I am having a minor problem.
This is not a request for help, this is to let the folks at Arch know there is a problem.
The problem has existed for well over two weeks now, and I have not seen any change, any mention, any reference to it. perhaps I am the only person who is having this problem, but I have had archinstall quit on me now about 20 times with this exit. I don't see how I can be the only one it's happening to.

That's not how these forums work. If you have a problem and want help to get it resolved, create a topic in the archinstall subforum.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey all!

I'm from the Bay Area in California. I hadn't heard much about Linux when I was younger, none of my friends were really computer enthusiasts. I loved spending time on computers, but my interest in how they worked was light and I felt like I was always better at breaking them than fixing them. (Maybe this is still true lol)

Fast forward a couple weeks ago, my girlfriend had her old laptop that she generously let me have to tinker around with and try to fix. It's an old HP laptop with a touch screen, but it had Windows + McAfee installed which was absolutely awful. It ran poorly and crashed constantly, so after doing some research I decided to revive it with a new OS and took a look at Linux. I installed Mint on it at first since I had heard that was pretty user friendly for someone fresh, and what started as a small project on the side quickly became a main focus and hobby of mine. I love tinkering around with how the computer works, customizing it to fit my own needs, and the freedom to do so!

Throughout learning Linux, I had been watching a bunch of videos and I'd hear about Arch either through research or just in general, and one day I finally decided to take the plunge and here we are! I'm still quite fresh and learning everything has been quite humbling. There's a lot to learn but I'm here for the journey. Hopefully one day I can be knowledgeable enough to help someone out too.

Anyways thanks for reading, take care smile

Hihi! my name is Rianne!
I live in the netherlands and am part of a very small and beginning indie game studio.
I am quite a PC nerd, and always dabbled with linux here and there for hosting minecraft servers and such.
When windows 10 got discontinued, I decided to fully make the jump to daily drive my linux distro of choice, Arch.
(I disliked manjaro before it was cool to dislike manjaro)
I hadn't made an account on this forum until now, because google search and browsing threads that already existed solved all problems I faced up until yesterday,
thanks for that y'all big_smile

oh also installing arch for the first time was a fun challenge

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone! I'm an American that has been in an "on again, off again" relationship with Linux since I was in high school, back in 2015.

As a Zoomer™ Zillenial™ 25 year old American, I've grown up around tech my whole life and as a result, have used Windows since the XP era and had no issue (for the most part). With Windows 8, though, I distinctly remember the backlash around the telemetry it introduced, alongside the advertising that was baked into it from the start, both of which only got worse by the 10 rolled around. At the time, though, I never really considered Linux to be a "viable alternative" since my knowledge of it was limited to what I saw in high school (we messed with Kali Linux in an optional cybersecurity elective for all of a week and that was it, lol) and as a result, I just learned to put up with Microsoft's garbage practices by sifting through forum posts and Google searches on how to manually disable as much of their bloat as possible. After a while, though, I got sick of having to constantly fight Windows Update and once 11 came along, I dragged my feet on updating for as long as possible.

I held out until last year and once I updated, I was Not a fan of Windows 11 and immediately began seriously looking to Linux as an alternative; when I finally decided to make the jump and began dipping my toes in, I started by using Fedora on my laptop for the majority of 2024. As I got more comfortable with Linux, I decided to install Bazzite on my desktop, and dual-boot it with Windows 11. After about six months and getting continually frustrated with the immutable nature of Bazzite, I changed over to Arch on both my laptop and desktop!

I've been running Arch for about four months now and I've loved everything about it; the DIY-nature of the community, the FOSS philosophy, and most importantly, having control over my own computer. I know exactly what's on here because I put it here, and I don't have to worry about Windows constantly phoning home or using my data to train an AI whose datacenter has a footprint that takes up a small village. I still have a dual-boot between 11 and Arch at the moment (my friends like to play games that have anti-cheat that isn't configured for linux, yippee), but for once in my life my Windows install is as barebones as possible and my Arch install is where I spend most of my time, and I don't plan on looking back from here. smile

Thanks for reading, everyone!! big_smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello!

I'm Yonas, a 26-year-old from the West Coast. For much of my early 20s, I was deeply committed to pursuing a career in medicine. However, after significant reflection, I realized I was no longer willing to sacrifice my mental and financial well-being without any guaranteed outcomes. So, I closed that chapter.

I hold a BS in Bioengineering from the University of Washington and absolutely love diving deep into science and math. Currently, I'm working my way through the Rust language book, aiming to achieve mastery. While I'm comfortable with languages like Java, Python, and MATLAB, Rust's capabilities, particularly its abstraction and functionality, resonate deeply with me.

A big part of who I am involves embracing a moral "grey zone." While my alignment is fundamentally altruistic, I have a strong independent streak and do not take kindly to being ordered around. Growing up as a Black man in Seattle within a lower-middle socioeconomic environment shaped my worldview and made me naturally empathize with the underdog. My experiences in football, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, bodybuilding, powerlifting, academia, and my professional career further solidified my respect for grit, independence, and resilience—qualities I've found reflected in the ethos of Linux. I strongly oppose corporate monopolies and centralized control, making my transition to Linux a stand against exploitation.

My political awakening came through exploring Marxist economics, particularly the works of economists like Michael Hudson and critiques from thinkers like Noam Chomsky. Understanding the broader global material conditions and local community despair made me realize the importance of personal and community-level self-sufficiency. Running Arch Linux symbolizes my commitment to resisting exploitation and embracing autonomy. I hope this resonates with others so we can collaborate, learn, and grow together!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello All,

Finally getting into Linux, and if you're in for a penny...

Been frustrated with Windows for decades, but family/kids and a busy work life have prevented me from taking the plunge. Kids are in college now, so I finally have more free time and have decided my next PC will be Arch. Assuming that goes well, I have thoughts about retiring my Windows domain controllers and moving all authentication and file shares to non-Microsoft machines. Long ago in another life (late 90s) I spent quite a bit of time messing with FreeBSD... seems like a good route to go if I want native ZFS support. We'll see how it goes. I'm well-aware that this rabbit hole is infinitely deep - how far I fall down it remains to be seen. For client machines I'll have my Arch playground (still being commissioned) and try to get my wife to consider moving her machine to an easier distro. Odds are we'll always have a Windows machine in the house because she'll refuse to learn, but I can keep her sandboxed, no problem. Glad to be stretching my wings again after 20-ish years!

Cheers!
