[RESOLVED] GTK4/GTK3 Apps unresponsive after full UI render

I'm having a strange issue with Gnome GTK applications. Some of them load completely and then the whole UI is unusable, by which I mean there is not interaction (think "greyed out" but fully rendered). Some load, but if you open a window like preferences, you're unable to make changes to the settings because the interface is unusable.

This happens with both GTK3 and GTK4. What compositor is used the results are the same. It has also happened between two fresh installations of Archlinux.

My typical compositor is Niri but LabWC and Cage have the same issues.

I'm running the freshest Archlinux update. And, thinking this could be a video driver issue, made sure to go back through the driver setup. I have an AMD 8700G and am using the iGPU, I don't have any other GPU installed.

Every other app works fine. Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Alacritty. I'm just really confused what could cause such an issue. I've removed .cache and even all the settings for the unworking GTK apps. That didn't do anything.

Any help is appreciated! Maybe I'm overlooking something.

Sincerely,

Nathan

To see if it's restricted to one user account, something you can try quick is creating a new user, logging in as that new user, and seeing if the behavior is the same. That'll at least help narrow it down.

Re: [RESOLVED] GTK4/GTK3 Apps unresponsive after full UI render

nb. that both, chrom* and firefox use gtk to some extent, maybe provide a list of the actually affected clients.
Are gtk3-demo/gtk4-demo affected?

Then to be  clear, this isn't a visual bug ("grayed out") at all, but (mouse) input isn't working on those clients?
Have you tried to operate them w/ the keyboard when the window has the input focus?
Mutter recently had some bug, stealing the mouse, but iirc that was down to xwayland - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waylan … plications

What compositor is used the results are the same … Niri but LabWC and Cage

What about weston (reference implementation) or sway (for being more mainstream/wlr)?

Re: [RESOLVED] GTK4/GTK3 Apps unresponsive after full UI render

@seth @cloverskull all good suggestions which I'll keep in mind. Ultimately it was my "profile" which was the problem. I'm going to slowly build it back up to see what the issue was exactly.

Am I having a windows 95 flashback? smile

Thank you!
