Steam instability since linux-firmware manual update

Games running through steam are unstable for me since the linux-firmware update that required manual intervention.
Game processes fail with these kinds of error:

Stack trace logging done
73.212 Error CrashHandler.cpp:190: Map tick at moment of crash: 9490477
73.212 Error Util.cpp:95: Unexpected error occurred. If you're running the latest version of the game you can help us solve the problem by posting the contents of the log file on the Factorio forums.
Please also include the save file(s), any mods you may be using, and any steps you know of to reproduce the crash.

Note that this happens both for proton-based windows games and native linux games like Factorio, so it should not be a wine-related problem. Edit: It also occurs at a semi-random time after game start. I can sometimes play for 15-30mins until crash, sometimes i cannot make it past the title screen and startup.

I already tried downgrading back to the old linux-firmware package, using pacman -Rdd and pacman -U, but that did not fix it either. In any case, i don't feel comfortable keeping my system unupdated for a long time. I am running the proprietary NVIDIA drivers on an RTX 3060, with Hyprland as my Desktop. Would be very nice if somebody could help!

Re: Steam instability since linux-firmware manual update

Please post the full output of lspci-k .

Try with nvidia-open drivers as they are recommended by nvidia since july 2024 .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Also see whether you can get an actual https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump

I will try nvidia-open, thanks for the recommendation! Sometimes it takes hours to a crash, sometimes minutes, so I cannot report immediate results. Wish me luck i guess

Re: Steam instability since linux-firmware manual update

A new crash just occured, this time my PC froze completely and was unresponsive, so i could not really get any kind of error message. The screen was frozen and the last half second of audio repeated in a loop. This smells kind of like a hardware issue to me, to be honest. My CPU, motherboard and PSU are quite old. Is there any way to get error logs after having to force reboot a PC using the power button on the case?

Re: Steam instability since linux-firmware manual update

Try not to have to force reboot, but enable REISUB and use that sequence to try and safely reboot from a crash with a few seconds pause between each key press (primarily the S is the one syncing stuff to disk, that might take a bit). If you managed that a

sudo journalctl -b-1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

should be able to give us good info on the system state at the time of dying.

that's btw. a kernel panic and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump might catch it in the act.
