Re: orphan in community

If you want to update packages in community, you must becomme a TU

Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

1) because maintainer orphaned it
2) when moving package from unsupported to communnity TU forgot to adopt it (it becomes orphaned automatically when placed in community first time).

Any TU can update any packagem but if TU doesn't use it, he most probably won't adopt it.
TUs don't want to move packages from community to unsupported, because already existing users expect to have updates.

Re: orphan in community

Thanks. So... how can I update Slune to new version? Should I create Slune-unsupported package?

Re: orphan in community

I did tried to update slune a while ago but a one point in the 1st level there was a freeze. I posted a comment about that. As I couldn't find the problem I gave up and orphaned it due tu time/ interest. If you want, you could check if the game freezes on your machine.  If not I'll assume it a problem on my side and will do the update. I can provide the updated PKGBUILD.

Re: orphan in community

how do packages that dont come from AUR get picked to be placed in [community]?
noticed earlier that some packages dont have any votes at all, or even 1-5 votes.
when a TU or developer makes a pkg it automatically goes to community rather than AUR which would be the case if a normal user did?
imo, if something like that is applicable ppl should vote for community packages like they do for AUR. maybe adding an .install script in each that adds a vote or something (and removes it when removed?).
if ppl dont use em is there a reason for the pkgs to stay there?
also is there any chance that a package eg. from extra has a dependency from community? why not moving all orphans to AUR? i think most are Willysilly's but if ppl actually use em they gonna get back to community pretty soon..right?
just some thoughts.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Usually it happens when TU has made nice package that may be useful for many people but is not yet even in AUR.

Votes don't really matter much.
Also, some time ago all votes were lost due to AUR breakage.

No. TUs can upload packages to Unsupported too.

Package usage tracking was discussed many times, but it's not implemented as of now.
And I don't think your proposal is good, adding usage tracking functionality to .install files is one of the worst ways, IMO.

dolby wrote:

As a general rule - TUs prefer to not move packages from community to unsupported, because users that may use them expect updated versions in community.
Anyway counting real usage is impossible. The easiest and rough aproximation may be done by counting downloads from FTP (this won't count mirrors/NAT/etc, of course).

dolby wrote:

No. All dependencies of any package in Extra must be either in Current or Extra. They are moved there from Community if needed.

Some of them may be put back into Unsupported if no TU will adopt them.

BTW, you and many other users are confusing AUR with Unsupported.
AUR = Unsupported + Community.
Every Arch Newsletter until few recent had this in FAQ in the end: wink

Q: What is the difference between AUR, COMMUNITY, and UNSUPPORTED?

A: AUR(Arch User Repository) is the name of the whole new system which is maintained by the TUs(Trusted Users). It lets anybody that signs up to upload PKGBUILDs to UNSUPPORTED but only TUs have access to COMMUNITY which is a binary repo that you can use with Pacman.

Re: orphan in community

As for tracking usage - perhaps ArchStats should be a tad more exposed.

Yes, but people are lazy to install it (and I think relatively small percent knows about it).

Re: orphan in community

That's indeed why it should be more exposed. It's now hidden quite deep on Arch's page, making it hard to find.
