[RESOLVED] Artifacts in UE5 with AMDGPU and questions regarding pkgs

Hi, I had used NVIDIA gpus since 2010 and recently decided to upgrade to an AMD RX 9070XT card which will be used mainly for gaming but also rocm and ue5 games development.

That said, I've been having a "hard time" with what packages I need to install to get the best performance and latest features.

Honestly, as I had only used NVIDIA gpus (not even an AMD iGPU), i was surprised that mesa had everything, pretty simple and straight forward but, at the same time, it made me asked what are the differences with "the other drivers and packages" available in the aur, so if I would be very grateful if you could help me understanding:

  1. mesa: open source drivers

  2. (from the arch wiki) amdgpu-pro-installer: provides the proprietary version of drivers, which "generally offer worse performance"

  3. mesa-git: from what I understand, it should be mesa git upstream

  4. mesa-amdonly-gaming-git: why is it "amdonly-gaming"??

Then there are the vulkan implementations:

  1. vulkan-readeon: should be the "to-go" option, is it open source?

  2. amdvlk: if vulkan-radeon is open source, then this should be the proprietary alternative, right?

From the arch wiki, I couldn't conclude which one offered better performance.

Lastly, when opening unreal engine (unreal-engine-bin 5.6.0-1), a dialog appears that reads:

Warning: Known issues with graphics driver

The installed version of the AMD graphics driver has known issues.
Please install the recommended driver version.

Would you like to visit the following URL to download the driver?

https://www.amd.com/en/support

AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
Installed: 2.0.349
Recommended: 24.2.8 or latest driver available

Here what catches my attention are the driver versions: I have mesa-git 25.2.0 installed, but it detects version 2.0.349 (which doesn't match any package in my system)

Thank you for your patience

I forgot to add that I'm using hyprland and unreal is actually showing a lot of artifacts related to lighting, which is consistent with the warning:

EDIT: changed img to url tag

Re: [RESOLVED] Artifacts in UE5 with AMDGPU and questions regarding pkgs

Please replace the oversized screenshot w/ a link, the board has a 250²px² rule so we don't have to scroll all that much wink
amdgpu-pro /was/ just a bunch og GL libraries and have been discontinued - it's not bitrot.
There're probably a bunch of custom mesa packages in the AUR but that's special-needs-only, start w/ the regular mesa pacakge.
RADV and AMDVLK are "competing" vulkan implementations and you can actually install both and switch between them to test their performance, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan … MD_drivers
There is no globally "better" because then the other one would be pointless.
(unrelated, but similar you can easily switch between VAAPI and QSV for intel hardware decoding - I had success transcoding bogus streams w/ qsv where vaapi could not be convinced)

No idea about the unreal situation, but would guess that you're usign AMDVLK at this point?

Re: [RESOLVED] Artifacts in UE5 with AMDGPU and questions regarding pkgs

thank you, it's much clearer now

There're probably a bunch of custom mesa packages in the AUR but that's special-needs-only, start w/ the regular mesa pacakge.

btw I tried searching for "mesa-amdonly-gaming-git" to see what was it about but I found only was the aur package site so I still don't know what makes it different from mesa or mesa-git, obviously it's related  to gaming, but in what way is it better suited for gaming? -> I will try it soon, just wanted to express the lack of a good description for the package

YES!! I removed amdvlk and it fixed the artifacts and the alert in ue5, also, it improved drastically the performance in various native and wine games.
I had started worrying there was something wrong with my card because I was getting much less fps than expected, this really puts my mind at ease.
