Struggling to get an older game working

To be fair, it's not technically a game, so much as a tool related to a game, but I'm trying ot get the Football Manager 2014 Editor running on my system. It worked fairly well until recently when I reinstalled the system. Now it simply fails to launch. The  output on launching is:

Edit: tha main game (FM 2014) runs on proton 4.11, so I've been using the same for this, although I have tried many other versions including experimental and GE.

Sorry - my bad. This is using proton 4.11 - which is the only proton that the main game runs with.

I've sat waiting for it for several minutes now. I suppose it's possible that it will launch eventually and I'll give it more time, but I'm not hopeful at this point. In the past I've sat waiting for it to launch for over an hour... I think that was just with a later version of proton - not sure if I waited that long with experimental.

Edit: It did launch after about 5 - 7 minutes, but the UI wouldn't respond to the mouse. I'm going to try it again with gamescope, but I'm not hopeful.

I guess the Linux version of this game uses X11 ?

What is your desktop environment?

KDE now removed the X11 session at log in, in favor of Wayland, Xwayland is fine, e.g. I can play an old X11 Linux game like Half-Life 2, maybe try KDE or a Wayland DE with Xwayland.

Environment is Hyprland on (obvs) wayland. I have plenty of games/apps running perfectly well on XWayland.

Have it again with gamescope using proton experimental and proton GE. Experimental just results in a mostly black screen and GE is as above - initial screen, but unable to interact with it in any way...

I have plenty of games/apps running perfectly well on XWayland.

I have plenty of screws that work perfectly well with a torx driver.
Doesn't meant the one with the philips head will.

There's not a great deal of hints in that "backtrace" suggesting what's wrong - test the behavior on X11 to rule out that's the problem.
