[SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

= Problem =

Hello!

Recently, I got a Valve Index, specially picked for compatibility with Arch Linux. I recently got a full software stack working with Envision, MonadoXR, Wlx-Overlay-S and Proton GE and great performance on a few games. I also played using SteamVR to get the room configuration, and that worked flawlessly as well, albeit with less performance compared to MonadoXR.

For the first 2 weeks or so I had no problems at all. I bought used, but the damage was only cosmetic and nothing seemed to be faulty hardware wise, especially since everything worked perfectly.

However, over the past couple of days (issues started on the 15th of this month), the HMD's USB connections stopped working on the VI (Valve Index).

Usually, I unplug and re-plug the cable that goes out from the HMD to the connector that goes to the Link Box.
Doing this, Launching Monado and playing games was working flawlessly as late at 10:30pm on the 14th.

Now, I cannot seem to get it connected, no matter what I try (see what I tried below).

I am able to get the *camera* working, and I later found out that the VI Link Box is basically an internal USB hub.
As of yesterday, rendering *was still working*. I could turn on Monado, and whilst my head wasn't tracked, rendering to the HMD was still working.
This tells me that the display was still working, and Monado could project to it.

When Monado doesn't detect a headset but can start an XR session, there is a simulated headset that bobs up and down lightly.
I could still see the simulated bobbing motion that Monado does, and launching games renders them to the HMD's display.
The VI's front lights even remain blue in standby mode, and would turn green when Monado is rendering to it.

Input however, stopped working entirely on the HMD. Both the controllers also would not send data. Motion data and button presses are not fed back to the computer.
Monado cannot detect the HMD or the controllers.

Yesterday, I managed to get a screenshot of it sporadically working, before i unplugged it and re-plugged it in order to try and see if it was working long-term. That was the last time I ever saw a sign of it working as intended. I can't send it because Imgur is over capacity.

However, I didn't know I was supposed to fully track what the vendor USB ID is for easier troubleshooting, so I may have accidentally made it harder for myself.

I am stuck on what I should do and how I should do it in regards to getting the USB detected and working again.

= What I have Tried =

I have tried the following to no avail.

- Unplugging All USBs from the back and leaving the VI to hog everything, using watch lsusb to do this.
- This this *BOTH* whilst the PC was active
- From coldboot
- Attempted to disable USB power management
    - Examples on the wiki don't show a way to universally turn it off. I do not know the USB Vendor ID of the Headset, so I cannot target it (paste link)
- Moving around USBs until it works
    - Didn't help, still the same errors just with different USB port numbers.

= Command Outputs =

`sudo dmesg` from cold boot
Unsure about Cable Damage
- The cable has a small crease. It's not on the headset part of the cable, it's on the part between the headset connector and the Link Box.
    - The crease was there before, but didn't cause any issues.
    - Cannot RMA due to it being an American import from eBay sad

Fairly sure that this isn't the cause. I wouldn't rule it out though.
If there is any way to diagnose cable health from Arch that would be nice.
Resources I Have Read
https://askubuntu.com/questions/7704/un … usb-device - No clue how to test my USB ports for hardware damage...
https://man.archlinux.org/man/lsusb.8.en - lsusb is very useful to check what was connected
https://superuser.com/questions/875922/ … with-linux - The documentation file isn't on my system...
https://paulphilippov.com/articles/how- … ress-error - Did this, but it didn't work, same errors.
https://www.baeldung.com/linux/control-usb-power-supply - I tried one of these commands, but got an 'access denied' error even with sudo, so I tried looking for something that felt less intrusive.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … 8-error-71 - This is why I think power management might be an issue due to over-current.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_management - Don't know the device product or vendor IDs....
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … ually-mean - I saw this before, but it went away on its own. Not sure if I solved this, if it's a seperate issue, or something else. Might be relevant.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … et-address - 'open: Permission denied'
https://libreddit.kavin.rocks/r/ValveIn … at_may_be/ - Windows, but likely also points to power management being the issue.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … e-that-ode - This likely indicates that the USB is failing pretty early, and that doing stuff by device or vendor ID might not be the way to go.
https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads … b.3601070/ - Not sure which of my ports are on the same hub.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1059530/ … 486950004/ - This seems to re-inforce that this is not OS-specific
What I Know
- Internally, the Index Link Box is potentially treated as a USB hub.
    - Likely, the 'Microchip Technology, Inc (formerly SMSC) Hub'.

- It could be something related to power draw, even though I recently upgraded my power supply to be 1000w.
- Might be something with the USB ports

I also learned that if you plug in a knuckle controller and try to open MonadoXR, you get a USB conflict, and Monado doesn't want to start.

...Which likely means that the USB Vendor is still somehow being picked up...

I feel like I have done a good enough job diagnosing the issue, and I am just looking to see where I can go from here.
Any and all help is appreciated. If you can provide detailed instructions on what parts of the wiki are most helpful, or which steps to take, that would be very helpful.
I made sure to include as much info as possible, so if this gets indexed by search engines, other people can debug their setup as well.

Re: [SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

Does it help if you dowgrade the kernel package to a version which you were using when the USB device worked?

Did you try plugging it into other machines to see if it completes enumeration?

I could do that. I might look into this soon. I did do an update recently, so that may have done it. I might target 6.14.7, since that's the last major version. I know that downgrading is just `pacman -U <kernel package>`.  How do I also downgrade headers and firmware as a group to 6.14.7?

Did you try plugging it into other machines to see if it completes enumeration?

I have one Linux desktop and I am the only one in the house that has one. No dice... sad

Re: [SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

So try it with Windows. If it still doesn't work you will know that something happened to the hardware itself.

You can pass multiple packages at once to 'pacman -U'.

Re: [SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

Hello!

We have a resolution! It was a hardware error.
Turns out the connector was dirty. This is likely from being bought used.

We used some DeoxITD5 on the connector between the link box and the headset. It started working immediately. The gold connectors also shine through quite nicely now smile

I got to use someone else's Windows PC. We also found out the device descriptor could not be found in Windows Device Manager.

After applying the spray on the connector, Windows picked it up. Running `lsusb` also shows it working perfectly as well. Envision also picks up the headset's motion as well!

Note to anyone who is outside the US and buying used as an import: clean your connectors! Find something that is made for electronics and clean out the connectors.

This is likely a hardware issue; so make sure to do some hardware maintenance after buying used if something seems amiss.

Solved!

Re: [SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

Update...

Unfortunately, that fix only worked for a few minutes. The cable was faulty and unreliable.
Specifically, the Trident cable. In between where it connects to the Tether cable (to the headset) and the Link Box itself.

We even applied the deoxidising spray to the plug going into the headset... still no dice.

Looking into buying a brand new cable soon.

Re: [SOLVED] Valve Index USB - 'unable to enumerate USB device'

Boo! I'm back.
Turns out it WAS a cable issue. Bought the cable in November, got it delivered in December, and just today I got everything working. I can even get Monado up, but I have a separate issue as well. Might be something for a new thread if I cannot figure it out on my own.

To anyone who has a very similar issue, try buying some new cables. I got mine from iFixit.
