After an upgrade, VLC no longer plays back pretty much anything I have on my machine. After installing vlc-plugin-ffmpeg, it's again capable of playing a MKV video of a movie, but can't switch between sound tracks or subtitle tracks, and I have no idea why.
When I try, the error is:
Unidentified codec:

VLC could not identify the audio or video codecI have idea what audio/video codecs to install; frankly, I would prefer to not figure it out for different video/subtitle formats.
I don't want to install vlc-plugins-all, since that pulls a number of KDE stuff to my machine for some reason.
It used to work perfectly before (when you just install the vlc package), hopefully there's a way to get back to that state? Thank you.

Thanks. However, why you would transition from a video player that would play everything to a video player that would play almost nothing by default (especially without advance notice) is beyond me.
