[Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Have a T440p with the nvidia dGPU, proprietary drivers are all set up and working. Currently using ly for DM and cinnamon for DE.  For whatever reason, ly keeps reverting its font to what I assume is a default/backup font upon rebooting, which makes it very small.  I've declared the font I want in /etc/vconsole.conf:

KEYMAP=us
FONT=ter-132b

Upon rebooting, the usual splash of "/dev/<root partition> clean" appears in the correct font for a few moments, blinks, and then changes back to the much smaller font before ly then appears with that small, presumably default font.

I tried the fixes the wiki suggests: restarting systemd-vconsole-setup.service, and ensuring I had the correct nvidia modules added to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to enable early loading (and reran mkinitcpio -P), neither of which worked.

I have a workaround currently, which is just a simple setfont script called by a custom service when the computer boots, and that works.

I'm wondering why this is happening at all, and if there's a more elegant solution to this.

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Is it strictly "ly" and doesn't happen when you disable it?
Do you have the consolefont hook in your mkinitcpio.conf?

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Disabled both ly and the font setting services, and yes the same issue still happens: correct font displays for a few moments with the "/dev/sda3 clean" splash before it blinks and reverts to a different font which is then what is used for the basic tty login.

I have the consolefont hook in my mkinitcpio.conf:

HOOKS=(base udev autodetect microcode modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block filesystems fsck)

So it seems the issue isn't related to ly.  Since the wiki talked about early loading of nvidia modules, my modules are as follows:

MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Do you keep the desired font when booting w/ "nomodeset", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters (you're not gonna be able to start a GUI session from there, that's expected)

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Booting with the nomodeset parameter makes the font appear as it should, yes.  I also ran a fastfetch in the tty when the font appears smaller, and it still displayed ter-132b as the terminal font.  So it sounds like the font is correct but it's displaying much smaller.  Looks like the wiki says this is due to the resolution changing?

Something else I noticed, the font size seems to revert back to small when I just enter a tty and reboot (or reboot from the ly menu), however entering my DE (cinnamon) and rebooting causes the larger font size to be maintained in ly/tty login.

Yes, the font shrinks once kms kicks in.

Sanity checks:

pacman -Qikk terminus-font
for initrd in /boot/initramfs-linux*; do lsinitcpio $initrd | grep consolefont; done

Have you rebuilt your initramfs after editing vconsole.conf?

Something else I noticed, the font size seems to revert back to small when I just enter a tty and reboot (or reboot from the ly menu), however entering my DE (cinnamon) and rebooting causes the larger font size to be maintained in ly/tty login.

This here will at most impact the resolution the monitor shows up w/, not the actual font configuration.
You can force modes, https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/fb/modedb.rst - but it's not necessarily ideal to run the console at a lower resolution.

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

There certainly is a consolefont.psf in either initramfs - do you get any errors about this during the boot?

sudo journalctl -b | grep -i font

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

My kinda gut feeling is that the consolefont hook applies too early (or nvidia modesetting loads too late) and either setting the font fails or it gets reset when the driver switches and because of this.

nvidia 470xx on a hybrid system that seems to run on i915, simpledrm device is blocked.
The setfont errors occur only after the root switch, there's nothing logged about the console font during the initramfs phase.

To be clear: ctrl+alt+F3 and

setfont ter-132b

works for you?

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Had to do a couple things to try and recreate the issue now, rebooting from both tty and my DE didn't recreate it.  It happened after I regenerated my initramfs during an update while I was signed in to my DE though, don't know what exactly is triggering it.

Yes, switching to tty3 and using that setfont command works.

vconsole.conf is here

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

vconsole.conf is clean (no weird stray non-printable characters)

It happened after I regenerated my initramfs during an update

Jul 31 18:48:59 thinkpad1 systemd-vconsole-setup[441]: setfont: ERROR kdfontop.c:212 put_font_kdfontop: Unable to load such font with such kernel version
Jul 31 18:48:57 thinkpad1 systemd-vconsole-setup[438]: /usr/bin/setfont failed with a "system error" (EX_OSERR), ignoring.

is otherwise completely gone from the journal?
Does merely regenerating "mkinitcpio -P" reliably cause this on the next boot?

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

The previous error that printed from running

sudo journalctl -b | grep -i font

Seems to only output when the font/size reverts back to small upon reboot.  When it boots with the correct size, that command returns nothing.

Rerunning mkinitcpio -P did result in the issue upon reboot, however I did it again after the font size switched back to what is correct and it did not cause the issue again.  I just started doing a bunch of reboots by signing into a tty and rebooting without doing anything else, and the issue just seems to happen randomly.  Some reboots have the correct size and some don't.  The only thing that seems reliable so far is the previous error outputting when the font/size reverts back to small, and no errors when the size is correct

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Race condition (some things happen in different order)
Please post a journal of a good boot as well.
Also, what happens if *after* creating the initramfs you remove the fonts line from /etc/vconsole.conf and then reboot?
Do you
a) still occasionally fail
b) but w/o the setfont errors
c) always get the wrong™ font?

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Journal of a "good" boot

Regenerating the initramfs and then commenting out the font line results in the "/dev/sda3 clean" displaying for a few seconds in the "correct" font before the screen blinks and switches to the "wrong" font.  This happened consistently across 6 reboots both from tty and from my DE.  No setfont errors are showing up either.

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

Status quo is likely that because of the late kms

Aug 03 22:32:15 thinkpad1 kernel: Linux version 6.15.8-arch1-2 (linux@archlinux) (gcc (GCC) 15.1.1 20250729, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.45.0) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue, 29 Jul 2025 15:05:00 +0000
Aug 03 22:32:26 thinkpad1 kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: enabling device (0006 -> 0007)

setting the framebuffer font in the initramfs completely fails and the non-deterministic approach of systemd to "just do when I, likel, feel like" gets you a race condition after the root switch where the font fails to set if that's attempted tooearly™

Why is i915 not in the initramfs?

Re: [Solved]Ly display manager reverts font on reboot

I'm not sure, I'm assuming it's because I have the kms hook removed?  I went ahead and added the i915 module to my mkinitcpio.conf and uncommented the font line again from vconsole.conf.  So far reboots seem to be consistently having the "correct" font?  I'll do some more reboots and messing around to see before marking it.
