Text-based AIM?

Hey everyone.  I couldn't really find a forum that pertained to this so I figured I'd post here.

I'm starting to use my Arch Installation without a graphical environment unless I need to, and I love the text based-browsers I've used. I was just wondering if there were any text-based clients for AIM that I could use without X that I can acquire through pacman, or other means.

Thanks.

Re: Text-based AIM?

centericq and bitlbee spring to my mind an instant. Both can be found in the official repos. centericq is a standalone-application whereas bitlbee works as a proxy and "translates" a variety of IM-Protocolls to IRC so you can use irssi, bitchX, weechat or whatever IRC-Client you like to chat on AIM. Pick your poison. smile

Re: Text-based AIM?

All three said so far I've personally used...

I've stuck with bitlbee because then I only have one chat program.  I highly recommend it for AIM.

Re: Text-based AIM?

I would recommend getting a jabber account that supports the AIM transport.  jabber is a superior IM system, and is open.  All ubergeeks must have jabber 8).
There's a lot more jabber clients out there to pick from.

Re: Text-based AIM?

I agree with phrakture. Screw AIM and use Jabber! Although not all clients support transports in a sane way. hmm

Re: Text-based AIM?

Personally, I don't like naim. My friend worships it but I just can't get used to how it handles things. centericq is nice, supports RSS and livejournal posting and such haha. I like 'all in one' apps like that... But it didn't work out in practice for me. I would say irssi + bitlbee. The default irssi setup is, I think, stupid. But! You can fairly easily make it very incredibly usable and friendly.

http://f0rked.com/articles/irssi <-- nice tutorial that explains how to install scripts and gives some nice examples of how to alter the status bar to a more sane setup as well as how to use screen with it.

http://www.irssi.org/scripts/ <-- a huge archive of irssi scripts. If you plan on using screen with it I would suggest using the screen_away script (it, obviously, sets you away when the screen is detached from a terminal).

using it with bitlbee is fairly straight forward. Either setup your own bitlbee server or just /connect im.bitlbee.org and it will explain everything.

There is also Pork

community/pork 0.99.8.1-2
Console-based AOL Instant Messenger & IRC client

Though I ahve never used it.

I can second that.

But using jabber without transports is kinda difficult. People are strongly against changing their habits at all.
