Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Hi there.

I recently recovered from a mis-upgrade to Xfree86-4.4 (using a Radeon 9600, which is unsupported).

Anyways, I just realized that I can't get 3d acceleration working. I did fglrxinfo, and the system says this:

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4

According to an FAQ I came across, this is supposed to be the ATI's OpenGL libs.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Xfree86, did the same with the ATI Drivers, and recompiled the fglrx module multiple times, but it is still the same: no ATI OGL drivers installed.

Can somebody help me? Please? sad

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Just a guess, but try pacman -R mesa. I don't believe it can coexist with the ati-drivers. Also re-install the drivers after that.

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately, I just did a check, and it turns out that I don't even have the mesa package installed in the first place. Really wierd.

Installing the arch Mesa package lets me have 3d acceleration, but it's very slow.

Anybody got any other ideas?

Thanks

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Next check the modules, are they loaded and being used (fglrx, rtc, agpgart, intel/via-agp)? lsmod will show you. You may want to post more information on your config files and hardware as well, to get more help.

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Wow. That was fast.

Actually, I just remembered this:

After I reinstalled xfree86-4.3, FireFox wouldn't work because it couldn't find libXinerama. So I found this http://linuxquestions.org/questions/arc … 3/4/164274, and did this:

cd /usr/X11R6/lib
 ld --whole-archive -share -o libXinerama.so.1 libXinerama.a
 ln -s libXinerama.so.1 libXinerama.so
 /sbin/ldconfig

FireFox worked after that, but no joy with the 3d acceleration.

I didn't bring it up before because I didn't think that linking the libXinerama libs would be related. Am I wrong?

I'm also kind of new to this, so what config files would be most helpful here?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Hi I had similar problems with 4.4 I tried going back to 4.3 using your method (which works!) but xscreensaver is still not working (10 mins then back to log in)

I tried removing xscreensaver but it still drops out after 10 mins...

Does anyone know where to look for xfree log files maybe that might help me...

So I assume Xfree4.4 does not work with Nvidia drivers too ?

In fluxbox  8)  no problem so is it KDE's fault or xfree ?

Mr Green (very  :? )

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Some basic ones...

xfreeconfig-4
rc.local
rc.conf
modprobe.conf

What did your lsmod show by the way?

As for NVIDIA I haven't used their drivers for awhile, but I heard there weren't any issues with upgrading xfree86 4.4. Are other GL programs running okay, or is it just xscreensaver?

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

You know, in a worst-case scenario, would wiping out the entire X11 directory with an rm -rf, and then reinstalling help?

I say this because right now, uninstalling xfree86 with pacman doesn't seem to be working. So maybe deleting the file manually would work?

I read somewhere that once you get a Linux system up and running, you should never have to do a full reinstall to fix problems, so I'd like to keep that as a "last resort" (but it's looking pretty inviting right now...)  sad

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

No setting self destruct (the big red button) is the last resort

I just feel that 4.4 has issues but I am hoping that these are quickly solved  smile

Meantime I am looking through xfree logs  :?

this worries me a little

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

emm does not look good...

anyway don't touch that button  lol

Keep it together man

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Based on your lsmod output and rc.conf file, fglrx does not appear to be used. Two things, I will suggest-

1. I also made the mistake of upgrading to 4.4, so I uninstalled xfree (pacman -R xfree86, along with dependent packages), and downloaded the old package. I then uninstalled (pacman -R ati-drivers) and untared the old xfree86 package and installed it. Finally reinstalled the ati-drivers package and everything worked like it did before.

2. I noticed only fglrx is loaded. Not sure how the drivers worked before, but this is my last take on it, as I am fairly new to this as well. Since you are new I'm assuming you don't know how to compile a custom kernel. A good starting point would be this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=. It tells you how to recompile the kernel and load the proper modules (don't install DRI however). When you get to the PKGBUILD part use the one on the second page for the latest drivers.

Re: Can't seem to install ati-driver opengl libs

Joy!

After I read your last post, I suddenly realized that I never uninstalled  and reinstalled both xfree86 and the ati-drivers at the same time.

So after I uninstalled both of 'em, xfree86 installed with no problems, but the ati-drivers complained of a lib file clash. Doing pacman -Sf solved the problem.

So my guess is that the upgrade to xfree86-4.4 actually overwrote this file. Add the fact that both the xfree and ati-driver package both "own" the file,  and that xfree86-4.4's file is newer than the one stored in both packages, meant that it never got overwritten properly in all my other reinstall attempts. So only after removing both the packages did the file really get removed and reinstalled.

Doing fglrxinfo for the first time after installing the drivers put my machine to sleep. It is (thankfully) working fine after a reboot.

However, FireFox is now complaining about a missing libXinerama.so file again. Should I do that "ld" lib linking that I mentioned earlier?

Cheers!

So I assume Xfree4.4 does not work with Nvidia drivers too ?

Xfree86 4.4, kernel 2.6.5, and Nvidia 5336 work flawlessly on my system.  Here's some related files (mine) which might help get your Nvidia back in order.
