[SOLVED] VLC is crashing immediately after start from menu

When I start vlc with double-clicking on video in dolphin or select vlc in the start menu:

When I start vlc from console everything works (but there is an qt error):

The difference is probably some bogus environment you fix only in your bashrc, compare

The biggest difference seems xwayland, maybe better check

tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof plasmashell)/environ | sort

but also whether

grep -i exec /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop

runs any parameters…

The first version is equivalent to the output in the OP except not

The only not terminal relevant additions in konsole are

which I doubt is causing this shutdown.

Can you

vlc >/dev/null 2>&1 </dev/null

or

vlc >/dev/null 2>&1 <&-

(this sends stdout to /dev/null but more importantly reads stdin from there or just closes it)

And it is very strange for me - I don't have desktop entry in menu even after reinstalling package with

However, this is ridiculous, file a bug at https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/ about vlc turning suicidal when it doesn't like the stdin.

Meh, the first one should have been

vlc >/dev/null 2>&1 </dev/zero

(muscle memory) the second one will still inherit the closed stdin.

This is a strace of bash but not the vlc process inside (and still reads /dev/zero into the strace) - sure that's the correct file and from the exact command in #21?
