Highscreen DAC not recognized on Linux at boot only works after replug

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Highscreen USB audio DAC. When I connect it to my laptop via a USB Type-C port, the power indicator light turns on — even when the laptop is powered off.

If the DAC is already plugged in during boot, Linux shows the following errors in the boot log:

[ 2.933999] usb 3-5: new high-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[ 3.375665] usb 3-5: string descriptor 0 read error: -75

[ 3.377235] usb 3-5: can't set config #1, error -71

After the system finishes booting, the DAC does not appear in the desktop volume control or audio settings. The only way to make it work is to unplug and re-plug the device, after which it is recognized and functions normally.

This happens consistently after every shutdown and reboot. I also have a USB docking station that shows a similar problem (details to be added later).

Has anyone experienced this issue before, or know how to resolve it? Any hints on whether it’s related to xhci_hcd quirks or power/reset handling would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Although this doesn’t affect normal usage, the system hangs at this point during boot for a while

Re: Highscreen DAC not recognized on Linux at boot only works after replug

make it work is to unplug and re-plug the device, after which it is recognized and functions normally

https://www.baeldung.com/linux/usb-device-reset-cli

When I connect it to my laptop via a USB Type-C port, the power indicator light turns on — even when the laptop is powered off.

Not all USB ports are made equal and on some systems you might also be able to control the behavior of (special) "Always On USB" in the UEFI.
What *might* happen is that the DAC powers on, attempts a handshake, fails (because there's no running system, just power supply) and gets stuck in that state.

The dock simply times out a couple of times, is it on the same USB port (which is always powered)?
Is the dock empty or are there any devices attached/built-in?

Sorry, I misclicked just now — I meant to hit Reply but accidentally clicked Report instead.

I only found the ErP option in the BIOS that might be related, but enabling it sometimes causes my wireless card (iwlwifi) to stop working.

As for the dock, the issue happens whether it is empty or has devices connected.
I also noticed through my DAC that all USB ports are always powered, including the Thunderbolt port.
However, when the dock is connected to the Thunderbolt port, everything works normally.

Let's hope I won't get banned lol

wifi aside (is there btw a parallel windows installation?): does the ErP option have any impact on the DAC situation?

Is the DAC connected via the dock?
Have you tried it directly?

Enabling or disabling the ErP option doesn’t make any difference.
I also have a dual-boot with Windows, and when I tested the DAC under Windows I observed the same issue. So this might be related to the manufacturer or the motherboard itself?

The DAC is connected directly to the laptop’s USB port, not through the dock.

Re: Highscreen DAC not recognized on Linux at boot only works after replug

I also have a dual-boot with Windows

Regardless of the DAC see the 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

So this might be related to the manufacturer or the motherboard itself?

Probably - does the DAC also get powered through the dock (w/o the system actually running)?
