[Solved] WINE does not start at all

Good day.

I have been trying to run some of my old Windows programs on my computer, but I have been trying to get WINE running for some time.

Firstly, I tried running my programs through WINE via Nemo file browser thing.

Did not work, did not give any indication as to why.

Then, I ran WINE from the command line:

$ wine MediBangPaintPro.exe
002c:fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" (6.0.0.0)
wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0000000140020928 at address 00006FFFFFC34F58 (thread 002c), starting debugger...
002c:err:seh:start_debugger Couldn't start debugger L"winedbg --auto 40 116" (2)
Read the Wine Developers Guide on how to set up winedbg or another debugger
wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c0000135

Mind you I have the following installed:

$ pacman -Qs wine
local/wine-stable 10.0-1
A compatibility layer for running Windows programs
local/wine-stable-debug 10.0-1
    Detached debugging symbols for wine-stable
local/winetricks 20250102-1
Script to install various redistributable runtime libraries in Wine.

I have also run

pacman -Syyu

and updated everything as of today. I have also rebooted to remove Linux firmware weirdness.

I searched up errors relating to Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" (6.0.0.0):

  • I found this Reddit post talking about the same error:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … nel_51212/

I have tried removing the ~/.wine folder, and running winecfg:

    [nephtalima@tomato-station-arch ~]$ winecfg
wine: created the configuration directory '/home/nephtalima/.wine'
002c:fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" (6.0.0.0)

    002c:err:seh:start_debugger Couldn't start debugger L"winedbg --auto 40 80" (2)
Read the Wine Developers Guide on how to set up winedbg or another debugger
004c:fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" (6.0.0.0)
wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c0000135

    (Doesn't work)

  • Then I found another Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions … _run_wine/) that linked to this website (https://www.gloriouseggroll.tv/how-to-g … ency-hell/), but two issues:

    1. It uses wine-staging, which conflicts with my existing wine-stable

    2. All the lib* packages it says to download are just reinstalled:

      [nephtalima@tomato-station-arch ~]$ sudo pacman -S giflib lib32-giflib libpng lib32-libpng libldap lib32-libldap gnutls lib32-gnutls mpg123 lib32-mpg123 openal lib32-openal v4l-utils lib32-v4l-utils libpulse lib32-libpulse alsa-plugins lib32-alsa-plugins alsa-lib lib32-alsa-lib libjpeg-turbo lib32-libjpeg-turbo libxcomposite lib32-libxcomposite libxinerama lib32-libxinerama ncurses lib32-ncurses opencl-icd-loader lib32-opencl-icd-loader libxslt lib32-libxslt libva lib32-libva gtk3 lib32-gtk3 gst-plugins-base-libs lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs vulkan-icd-loader lib32-vulkan-icd-loader cups samba dosbox

Which also doesn't solve anything (and I don't want to be on wine-staging)

  • Then I found this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/co … lications/, which has a link that goes to another post on this forum (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=286784), but this is useless as I don't have any errors with systray, so I completely doubt that this is relevant

  • I also found this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=268151. I tried running

    $ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/clean_win32 winecfg
    $ WINEPREFIX=~/clean_win64 winecfg

    But they fail:

    [nephtalima@tomato-station-arch ~]$ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/clean_win32 winecfg

  • I have also taken a look at this post:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=299491, but the issues there don't seem too relevant, and the solution mentions that "[They're] gonna chalk it up to the fact that [they] have too many process running at once", which doesn't help as the only other applications I have open at the moment are this browser and my terminal, and if they affect WINE this much, then wtf.

  • Finally, I found this post:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=268723
But I don't have any NVIDIA drivers, and I doubt this is a graphics related issue... I may be completely wrong, but goddamn.

I don't know what is going on anymore, and winedbg and winecfg and wineboot have not worked AT ALL. :(

Some more information:
The program I want to run runs fine on my laptop, which has:

[nephtalima@hyacinthe ~]$ pacman -Qs wine
local/wine-stable 9.0-3
A compatibility layer for running Windows programs
local/wine-stable-debug 9.0-3
    Detached debugging symbols for wine-stable

I'd like to believe that it is not a graphical issue, as I have no mentions of it in my error messages, but I may be completely wrong.

Thank you and good luck on my issue

Re: [Solved] WINE does not start at all

pacman -Syyu

Please check the pacman manpage on what the second "y" does and then stop doing that unless you really *really*mean to.

nb, that wine-stable isn't in the repos and will not be covered by such updates unless you're getting it out of a 3rd party repo (which?)
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/wine-stable - you might want to try to update/rebuild that, but beforehand maybe test to run wincfg from the repo version.

I recognize that it refreshes the database, and yes it would be faster to not do it, but typically I know that the updates are going to take like 3 minutes to complete and another 10 seconds isn't really worth worrying about.

So, yes that AUR page is where I got this WINE package, and it works on my laptop despite me not really updating it since I got it on my laptop (which makes sense).
So I downloaded that package again and installed it, and:

[nephtalima@tomato-station-arch MediBangPaintPro]$ winecfg

This popped out a window for WINE configuration, which means I have some progress! big_smile

Unfortunately, now I run into a new problem. Launching the program again yields:

It's not about the 10 seconds of your life, its about the wasted network / mirror bandwidth that somebody has to pay for

Ah that makes sense. That's fine enough for me; I use more than that daily for it to be significant.

Re: [Solved] WINE does not start at all

It is also an awesome way to trash/invalidate/outdate your local database, so don't.
Also please avoid bloating the thread w/ pointless full quotes (which is about me having to scroll more tongue)

The wine debug/error output has obviously changed
1. is this still wine-stable or actully wine from the repos
2. which version of medibang paint pro is this?

Ah I see. Thanks for the info!~

Anyways, back to the topic at hand:

seth wrote:

This is still wine-stable. I didn't want to use the one from the repos (iirc, that is wine-staging) mainly because I didn't want to completely bork the existing configuration (as I am not the most experienced with WINE). This is the latest version of it as of yesterday.

seth wrote:

I don't know. I installed this version on my Windows installation back when I used to daily drive Windows, and I do not know how I can check it when it doesn't run. AFAIK, this exact same version is the one on the laptop, so I would take a wager that something minor changed from WINE 9 to WINE 10.

I was busy today but only got back now. I didn't mention for brevity but I also tried LTSpice XVII and it didn't work due to similar error yesterday when I first started this thread. Now I have tried to run LTSpice and it works without issue (haven't tested fully yet, but it launches and that's more than it was doing yesterday).

I've played around with LTSpice now, and no major issues to report back. Since LTSpice has loaded, I now deduce that now it is an issue with MediBangPaintPro, so I will install a newer version and report back.

I think this issue is with MediBangPaintPro itself, as I tried installing 29.1, but WINE still freaks out on launching it... I will mark this as solved since this isn't a WINE issue anymore.
