[SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Hi

I did an update today and after that my system does not suspend anymore.
I mean all seems to be fine: display goes off, openrgb reacts properly and disables leds as I set, but fans keep spinning. I cannot wake it up, only hard reset works.
I guess it's another issue with nvidia: i went from nvidia-lts-1:575.64.05-3 to nvidia-lts-1:580.76.05-5, however journalctl -b -1 does not show anything spectacular (I beat partially due to corrupted journal file which is mentioned by journalctl).:

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

I did an update today and … went from nvidia-lts-1:575.64.05-3 to nvidia-lts-1:580.76.05-5

Suggesting you skipped a month (don't feel bad, I'm probably the laziest updater on this forum)

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_L … cific_date - bisect the offending update.
If you're convinced it's nvidia, removing that and trying to run/suspend/resume w/ nouveau would work?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Oh I forgot about the possibility of rolling back.
So i went quite far, even farer than the points i know were fine, and the problem persists hmm.
Apparently nvidia drivers are not the one to be blamed.
If I am not mistaken that would mean that my hardware started causing problems?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

I switched /sys/power/mem_sleep from deep to s2idle. System does not go into a deep sleep now but at least I am able to wake it up.

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Did you reboot after the downgrade?
Did you maybe update the system firmware?

It's not plausible that the suspend randomly broke w/ the update - how much uptime did the system have before (assuming you also rebooted after the concerned update)?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

yes, I have rebooted after each downgrade.
My uptime was usually around 2 weeks. Maybe a bit longer in august. I only rebooted after I updated my system and there was a kernel or nvidia update.
I am not sure about firmware, you mean linux-firmware-* packages? I updated them along with other packages.
I most likely have updated system between reboots, but only if I havn't seen linux/nvidia updates.
I have rebooted today after update and just after that I have discovered suspend freezes.
I was blaming nvidia as in the past it was breaking my suspend (but at resume step) regulary.

No, the UEFI (eg. vida fwupd)

If you check your journal, did you previously actually go for S3/deep or has this actually changed form s2idle to S3 w/ the reboot after the update only?

Also

I cannot wake it up, only hard reset works.

You've tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) ?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Something will have changed, did you alter the kernel commandline/bootloader config or module parameters during the last good boot?
There isn't a parallel OS (windows)?
Since apparently the OS never enters S3 (fans keep spinning), what does a (complete) boot until a (successful) s2ide cycle look like?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

I am trying to recall any changes I could have done, but with no success so far. I have compared diff of /etc/ and /boot between current and some older backup and I see nothing that would click.
I have no other OS, Arch only.

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Did you install any packages during the critical timeframe (eg. gpm…)
What kind of bluetooth devices do you use?

Any change you updated the firmware of your nvme?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

So I have btrbk configured and I have booted from snapshot from June 1st, which was fine according to what I see in logs.
I am sure I have booted into proper snapshot by verifying tail of /var/log/pacman.log. and the problem persists.
So apparently something else is the culprit.

When it comes to the bluetooth I have two controllers, one on MOBO, but it is (was) not supported by linux properly so I use usb stick with another one. As for devices, nothing fancy - smartphone, headphones and xbox controller. nothing new was added nor changed during last months.
For the sake of test I have turned off the usb one, I do not have much control on integrated one, I have it disabled with udev rules.

There is nothing that comes to my mind in terms of hardware change. The really only change I did was connecting new device (which happend before the reboot after which things went wrong): nvme reader on usb. but I have it disconnected right now.
But I havn't (at least consciously/manually) updated any firmware.

When it comes to nvme issues you have linked, I see none of these errors in logs:

$ journalctl -b | grep nvme

Can you post a complete journal from an old boot w/ a good S3 cycle and a current, bad one?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

"current" is on the current LTS kernel and doesn't include a sleep attempt.
Even the "good" ones have

Jul 24 08:10:17 Kicer kernel: ACPI: PM: Waking up from system sleep state S3
Jul 24 08:10:17 Kicer kernel: spd5118 1-0051: PM: dpm_run_callback(): spd5118_resume [spd5118] returns -6

Jul 24 08:10:17 Kicer kernel: xhci_hcd 0000:01:00.2: xHC error in resume, USBSTS 0x401, Reinit

Try the 6.16.4 kernel (where an interim xhci bug is supposed to be fixed) and blacklist spd5118 (it's a themal sensor for DDR5 memory)

When you booted a previous snapshot, did that already include beesd?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Here is an updated log with: kernel 6.16.4, spd5118 blacklisted and s2idle sleep + frozen deep sleep:

https://jumpshare.com/share/K0WqqR3cFPs … RxDydP0EGv

When it comes to beesd I had it installed some time ago but it caused me problems (https://www.reddit.com/r/btrfs/comments … or_defrag/ if interested) so after some time (august) I gave it another try.
So I didn't have it installed on the snapshot from June I tried. However I did at least a few reboots after installing bees and not having freezes. Also I use bees manually only and I tried it only once after installation in August.

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

So dead ends … can you suspend/wake from a live distro like https://grml.org/ or the install iso?
And if so, can you still suspend after mounting the nvme somwhere?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

I have tried SystemRescueCD as I have it on a usb stick already.
It has kernel 6.6.30 and freezes on suspend exactly the same way.
I've used sleep/hibernate for some time and never had a problem with it. If anything, it was when waking up.
So am I right to say that some of my hardware started making an issue?

The BIOS/UEFI version is actually very new, are you *sure* it wasn't updated during the critical time?
Can you downgrade it?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

The bios version you are seeing is an upgrade I did to see it helps. I did it after I ran into problems.
The last time I upgraded bios was on 01/24 (BIOS F11 09/27/2024). I just rolled back to that version, but it changed nothing obviously.
I think I'll disembowel my PC this weekend to test minimal setup and see if it works.

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

So an update:
I have removed everything from my PC, including: all but one RAM sticks, NVMEs, SSDs, and all uneccesary connectors (usb for chassis mostly)
So the only things left connected to my MOBO were: cpu, one RAM stick (which I kept placing into different slots, I also tried different ram sticks), GPU (with nouveau driver), keyboard and USB drive with system rescue cd. And power of course smile
And PC kept freezing on suspend (as a reminder: all things seem to be going into sleep but fans keep rotating and the only way to wake up PC is to hard reset it).
I'll have a possibility to test another GPU, so I'll give it a try in a few days. But I suspect that either my MOBO or CPU is the problem.

Question remains why, though. I'd understand if you changed the firmware or firmware settings.
How's the performance of s2idle, though? Do you face an obviously increased battery drop?

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

I am on a PC, so no battery issues wink Yet I'd prefer my computer to go completely silent at night.
I have the infamous intel 13th generation. Maybe that's related?

That would suggest that s2idle isn't even properly entered hmm

The intel bug will fuse your CPU w/o the µcode patches but that doesn't explain the sleep behavior - this is rather related to the ACPI, ie. the boards firmware.
Did you previously maybe use any acpi_osi paramteters?
Eg. like

acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2015"

Re: [SOLVED] After latest update, suspend freezes

Oh I never used s2 before and I thought this is how it looks smile.
So for sure system goes into some sort of suspend as it goes a bit quiter that ususally but other than that it looks exactly like when it is freezed when i use S3 or S4 (except for that it can be normally woken up by some input or power button).

I have never set acpi_os parameter knowingly.
