Hi,
Does anyone know, is there a known bug with either the SDDM display manager itself or otherwise with kernel 6.16 which causes SDDM to fail on system startup (black screen with cursor)?
(Everything works fine on LTS kernel 6.12, it specifically happens on 6.16)
Or is there something I have to fix myself?
When I manually run a `systemctl restart sddm.service` from another TTY it does launch correctly again.
But with almost every new boot, it fails again.
So I suspect some timing problem might be going on, otherwise it's hard to explain why I'm able to manually start it that way.
My machine is a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and it has AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics as well as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU.
I also have the NVIDIA proprietary driver installed.
Also note that the issue happens when I boot with dynamic graphics configured, so that the AMD graphics are used by default (which I use most lot of the time to save energy).

Race condition, the 580xx nvidia drivers have shown slow inits, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p2256488
If you cannot completely disable the nvidia GPU in the UEFI settings, please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General (save it before restarting SDDM) and maybe also your system journal holds clues where things are failing.
Do you have the amdgpu modules in the initramfs?

Are the nVidia modules loaded early via your initramfs?
See:

EDIT: Ah, OP prefers NOT to use nVidia for SDDM... ignore my post.
Nothing mentioned in the release notes, but see if the behavior changes with 580.82.07, now in testing.

The amdgpu module is early loaded. I now manually checked it, it's in both the normal and LTS initramfs.
NVIDIA is not, but since the problem that I'm experiencing does not seem to happen when I configure my laptop to use dedicated NVIDIA (disabling the AMD graphics), I suspect this problem might not NVIDIA related at all.
Ah, so SDDM is still on Xorg by default. Somehow I remember it was already on Wayland before, but maybe I'm wrong with that. At least currently it clearly isn't.
This is my Xorg.0.log, copied from the moment immediately after SDDM failure:

Hi, after some update sddm stop to work and simply turn the monitor off after login.
I do some journalctl and wiki search with no much success.
In the troubleshooting phase I change the default shell from fish to bash, and that was the solution.
I needed to do work quickly, so stop wandering the reasons of what this was the case, so throw this here maybe there is a correlation
Offline
@jotix, please stop spamming that in every SDDM thread you find.
fish is not a shell but a toy and setting it as default shell will certainly break numerous things, but we already know what the immediate problem is in these threads.

Sorry but is useful information, I have a very similar problem at almost the exact time and only post what work for me... maybe the exact thing happens to other and there is other possible solution .
what's your problem?

No, you don't.
Ah, you figured that you don't in fact "have the excact same problem"…
The OP of this thread has a problem w/ the nvidia driver not properly initializing (in time) - we *know* this.
It's great that you solved your problem, but it's extremely unlikely that somebody set fish as their default shell tbw. and it will for absolutely sure not cause any kernel-dependent regressions. It will simply fail all the time because fish is barely posix compliant and will fail on all sorts of minor bashisms.
This is not a "maybe" situation.

do you even know how to read properly?
you misquoted me. I write similar problem not the exact same problem.
so yeah, short live on the forums, first post and find the famous arch toxicity...

Mod note: Please stay on topic, folks.
Posting questionable calls to action for unrelated issues is actively discouraged.
Furthermore, posting the exact same copy-and-paste text in multiple unrelated threads may be regarded as spamming.
