Steam Games open extremly slow!

I am new to arch linux and i installed steam from the multilib repo and everything was perfect but just randomly now every Game i want to open takes like 5 - 10 minutes to start. I know my laptop is not that bad as im on a laptop with 4060 mobile and intel i7 13620h and i dont know what to do. I am also dual booting arch and windows. I can give you as much info as you need if you ask. THX in advance!

I think it is the pre-shader caching. It will always be done, if there were some updates to the game or graphic drivers.
I had the same yesterday. I started Indiana Jones, pre-caching takes a while, than there was an update, later I started the game and the pre-caching started again.

Sometimes you will see in a popup of steam, that this is happening, sometimes you see it in the download area of steam.

There are two options for game updates/shader pre-cache:

1. When Steam starts it will auto-update all games not set to option #2.
2, Launching a game will activate updating/pre-caching for only that game.

The global setting is under Steam->Settings->Downloads. Each game can be set under Properties->Updates.

The main issues will be your download speed and the number of games you have set to option #1 (auto-update).

One workaround would be to start Steam w/Auto-Update on and go do something else for 30 minutes, or more if you have many games.

I use a hybrid strategy of letting a few games auto-update with the others set to launch only.


To emulate flesh machines, I am learning...

I dont think its that because games like celeste launch quick and easy evertime opposed to like cult of the lamb which takes ages to launch everytime.

There're network issues in 6.16.{2,3,4} that were also backported into the LTS kernel, do you still have this problem w/ 6.16.5?

I am new to arch linux

Edit: the theory being that the game wants to perform some network operations.
6.16.5 is only in the testing repos for now - don't enable those, wait until the kernel makes it into the core repo.

im so sorry i fixed it i had to set SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland,x11 with a fallback option thank you all for your help

Did you explicitly set "SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland"?

Not sure how this would introduce a 5 - 10 MINUTE delay on starting the game only, though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
