Hello everyone
The Mediatek mt7921e Wi-Fi adapter in my AMD Z16 ThinkPad Gen1 fails to initialize on Arch Linux since I updated yesterday.
I am aware of the linux-firmware intervention situation and I did uninstall and reinstall linux-firmware in the hopes that this would solve my problem. Unfortunately, it didn't.
From all I have learned while researching this issue, I think the problem is quite simple: The driver loads, but the firmware doesn't because it is not available at `/lib/firmware/mediatek/`. I am not very experienced and might be wrong about that though.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot with kernel 6.16.7-arch1-1.
2. Observe `dmesg | grep mt7921e`:
[ 6.581954] mt7921e 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 6.587524] mt7921e 0000:01:00.0: ASIC revision: 79220010
[ 6.663422] mt7921e 0000:01:00.0: HW/SW Version: 0x8a108a10, Build Time: 20250903123148a
[ 7.032951] mt7921e 0000:01:00.0: WM Firmware Version: ____000000, Build Time: 20250903123243
Expected Behavior:
The mt7921e Wi-Fi adapter would load its firmware successfully and initialize, allowing network connectivity.
System Information:
- Kernel version: Linux 6.16.7-arch1-1
- DE: GNOME 48.5
Full system information can be accessed here: https://nextcloud.paulussen.id/index.ph … M3ZXo9qLLS
Additional Notes:
- `sudo modprobe -r mt7921e` stalls.
- `sudo modprobe mt7921e` completes without any effect.
- When shutting down the computer or trying to reboot, it hangs at `Failed to send WATCHDOG=1 notification message: Connection refused`.
`lspci -k | grep -iA3 network` returns:
01:00.0 Network controller: MEDIATEK Corp. MT7922 802.11ax PCI Express Wireless Network Adapter
Subsystem: Lenovo Device e0c7
Kernel driver in use: mt7921e
Kernel modules: mt7921e
Should I try to find the missing firmware somewhere and put it in `/lib/firmware/mediatek/`, or what would be the best way to deal with this?
Update:
The problem was temporarily solved by downgrading the package with "sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux-firmware-mediatek/linux-firmware-mediatek-20250808-1-any.pkg.tar.zst" and adding "IgnorePkg = linux-firmware-mediatek" to "/etc/pacman.conf".

You can use a downgrade as a temporary solution
sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux-firmware-mediatek/linux-firmware-mediatek-20250808-1-any.pkg.tar.zst

Arch's gitlab is not upstream. Which is why reporting it there will not solve it. https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … ote_322658. Sadly multiple mediatek users would rather downgrade than report the issue upstream https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=305019.

Arch's gitlab is not upstream
I never said it was. I just provided a link containing a clarification about it being an upstream issue.

I'm relieved to know what the issue is, and I'm grateful for your help! /\
Unfortunately, I must admit that I'm not very experienced with Linux yet.
What would be the procedure for reporting this issue upstream?
I report bugs regularly, and I think I know how to write a decent bug report.
I would be happy to help if you could guide me.

According to https://gitlab.com/kernel-firmware/linu … quests/684 you need to send a report to the linux-mediatek mailing list linux-mediatek@lists.infradead.org

Thank you!
It looks like someone already notified the mailing list, see:

I downgraded and everything is back to normal. Should I add solved to the title of the thread or wait until it is really solved and not only temporarily?

If downgrading doesn't help, did upgrading actually cause this? Did you only downgrade the kernel, the firmware, both or did you completely roll back the update?

My gut tells me not to mark it as solved just yet. Not until a patch for this has been issued. If I understand correctly, that is not yet the case.

loqs is asking your to install the patched firmware, either by doing it manually or by downloading the linked package and running "pacman -U linux-firmware…" to install it.
If that firmware package works, you can probably mark this thread as solved since your immediate problem is gone and the general one is addressed elsewhere.

Ok, I see. Thanks for explaining. And that would not be the same version as I already installed with the downgrade `sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux-firmware-mediatek/linux-firmware-mediatek-20250808-1-any.pkg.tar.zst`, right?

No, not the same. loqs' package is to confirm the suggested patch (in doubt that this is indeed the relevant firmware binary in your case)

I downloaded the file and installed it with `sudo pacman -U linux-firmware-mediatek-20250917-1.1-any.pkg.tar.zst` and rebooted my system with linux and linux-lts and in both cases the Wi-Fi adapter seems to work without any problems.

Also installed the patched module from @loqs, and my wifi now works seeminly without problems after rebooting.

I am sorry if this is not the appropriate thread or if I am spamming. After updating I can't seem to make my adapter work, even when downgrading. Here are some logs from various configs.

I'd first and foremost try to take the system off power (that includes the battery) for some minutes.
I the issue remains w/ loqs' firmware package, please open a new thread and post a complete system journal for a boot covering such crash.

This fixed it for me. I rolled back to the prev version `linux-firmware-mediatek-20250808-1-any`, but wifi wouldn't come back after restarts. I turned off my laptop for a few minutes, and after a fresh boot things started working again.
I'm now curious why this was required for the rollback to kick in?

Mediatek wifi chips are notorious for probably SRAM bugs, unrelated to any genuine firmware bugs (which might simply trigger this as secondary problem, but dual booting is also a popular way to constantly run into this)
Can you also test https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_TZ7aG … sp=sharing ?

I had the same issue, spend the last few hours trying to downgrade and eventually also finding that commit, but downgrading and keeping my laptop off and without power eventually made it work.
