Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

No issue under Cinnamon.
gnome-calculator, file-roller or nautilus do not crash.
So it is an issue with the Gnome desktop or (more probably) with Wayland being enforced by it.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Thanks for the reply.

I put (putted?) the following in /etc/environment:

# https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/6574
export GSK_RENDERER=gl

`file-roller` and the like now starts without crashing.
Still, `steam` hangs and shows nothing, `minecraft` eat the CPU and freeze, and the dead key of the Ergo-L keymap is ignored.
It s all messy.
I think I will just abandon Gnome the same way it abandon NVIDIA GPU users. ?
I tried Cinnamon and it works as expected.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

That's not the correct syntax for /etc/environment, would be only

GSK_RENDERER=gl

also just test the behavior w/

GSK_RENDERER=gl gtk4-demo # pick some affected gtk4 client you have/care about

and under no circumstances you should then get sth. like

#5  0x00007ffff5597485 in terminator_CreateSwapchainKHR (device=0x555556156588, pCreateInfo=<optimized out>, pAllocator=0x0, pSwapchain=0x7fffffffc718)
    at /usr/src/debug/vulkan-icd-loader/Vulkan-Loader/loader/wsi.c:612

Maybe first things first: is this an optimus setup to begin with?
And if so, the section I linked was actually "GTK4 applications using the dGPU on NVIDIA Optimus setups"

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

You're right. I forgot the `export` token.

Tried again without it, and I have the same behavior. No more crash, but:

- Steam displays no window.
- Minecraft takes 100% CPU and is unplayable.
- The Ergo-L keymap is still broken.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Those seem like unrelated issues and are possibly rather because you've moved from Gnome/X11 to Gnome/wayland (did you?)

loginctl session-status
lspci
eglinfo -B
vulkaninfo --summary

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Yes, I did. As you stated, Xorg will soon be unsupported, anyway.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Ok, so this is a Kepler chip on the 470xx driver and it somewhat looks like you're running on llvmpipe

glxinfo -B

Do you set "nvidia_drm.modeset=1", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters ?
Also because of the lacking fbdev support you might be running on the simpledrm device, try to add "module_blacklist=simpledrm" as well.

I assume you don't have any of remaining issues w/ an X11 session?

B/c of vulkan, do you have some /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia*icd*.json and what if you export VK_DRIVER_FILES to use that explicitly?

Yes, it uses llvmpipe.

NVIDIA's modeset is set:

BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=bbfac577-21fd-431b-b733-8b96645fef2a rw loglevel=3 splash quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1

On X11 (with Cinnamon), everything works as expected.

I will try the other hints.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

The content of /etc/envionment is now:

#
# This file is parsed by pam_env module
#
# Syntax: simple "KEY=VAL" pairs on separate lines
#

# https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/6574
GSK_RENDERER=gl
VK_DRIVER_FILES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json

The content of /proc/cmdline is:

BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=bbfac577-21fd-431b-b733-8b96645fef2a rw loglevel=3 splash quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1 module_blacklist=simpledrm

- Minecraft still lags like hell.
- Steam now has a window! But games lags as well.
- Dead-key still behaves like I double tapped it.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Any changes to vulkaninfo or glxinfo?

About the dead-key situation, if you had any X11 keyboard config going on, that's now moot.
Are you using an IM other than ibus, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GNOME#Input_methods ?
What keyboard layout are you using anyway?

I had references to fcitx in my environment but it is not installed.
I guess that I am using the default input method.
I will confirm it after a reboot without this garbage env vars.
I will also try to reboot without KMonad.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

I now have this in my environment:

QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
QT_IM_MODULES=wayland;ibus
XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus

KMonad is deactivated (and it is really painful for someone used to the home row mods!)

Still, the dead key does not work.

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Interesting information: I also tested Cinnamon with software rendering and Cinnamon on Wayland (options available from the login manager).

On Cinnamon with software rendering, the games are as fast as before. No real difference with normal Cinnamon.

On Cinnamon with Wayland, the games are laggy like in Gnome 49. (+ I completely lose my keyboard layout)

Re: Gnome 49, segmentation fault

Cinnamon with software rendering

What exactly does that mean?
What does "glxinfo -B" resp. "prime-run glxinfo -B" report there.

Are you still trackign https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=308523 ?
